Position Summary Do you have a passion for making sound lending decisions while helping members achieve their homeownership goals? Dow Credit Union is seeking an experienced Mortgage Underwriter to join its Mortgage team. In this role, you'll evaluate mortgage and home equity loan applications, analyze risk, and make informed underwriting decisions that support both member success and the financial strength of the credit union. As a key contributor to the lending process, you will review complex financial and property information, ensure compliance with investor and regulatory requirements, and help deliver an exceptional member experience from application to closing. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Underwrite mortgage and home equity loans in accordance with Dow Credit Union policies, investor guidelines, and regulatory requirements. Evaluate creditworthiness using income, assets, employment history, debt-to-income ratios, loan-to-value ratios, credit reports, and supporting documentation. Approve or deny loan applications within delegated lending authority. Review real estate appraisals and valuation reports to ensure accuracy, marketability, and compliance. Process Reconsideration of Value (ROV) requests and communicate with Appraisal Management Companies (AMCs) regarding revisions or clarifications. Analyze title commitments to ensure acceptable risk and proper lien positioning. Submit loans through Automated Underwriting Systems (AUS) and mortgage insurance providers. Manage underwriting pipelines to ensure timely decisions and service-level expectations are met. Clear underwriting conditions and prepare loans for final approval and closing. Perform prefunding quality control reviews to identify risk and ensure compliance. Partner with processors, loan originators, title companies, appraisers, settlement agents, and other stakeholders to facilitate a smooth loan process. Stay current on mortgage regulations, investor requirements, and industry best practices. Qualifications Experience Three to five years of mortgage underwriting or related mortgage lending experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of mortgage and home equity lending practices, regulations, and underwriting guidelines. Exceptional analytical skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to interpret and evaluate complex financial documentation. Effective organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple deadlines. Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently while contributing positively within a team environment. Proficiency with mortgage lending technology and standard business software applications. Education & Licensing High school diploma plus additional post-secondary education or equivalent experience required. Registration with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System & Registry (NMLS) required in accordance with the SAFE Act. Must maintain compliance with annual SAFE Act renewal requirements.
