Job Description

Payroll Specialist LeadRobert Half, San Mateo, California, United States (Hybrid)The Payroll Lead is responsible for ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll operations while providing functional leadership and support to the payroll team. This role serves as the primary escalation point for payroll issues and a subject matter expert on federal, state, and local payroll regulations. The Payroll Lead partners with HR, Finance, and other departments to drive efficient payroll processes and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
Payroll OperationsOversee end-to-end payroll processing, including review, validation, and complex transactionsAct as the primary escalation point for payroll issues and employee inquiriesEnsure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including California wage and hour lawsSupport payroll and timekeeping systems, including testing (UAT), upgrades, and troubleshootingManage year-end processes, including W-2 and W-2C processing, and annual escheat reportingMaintain and update payroll procedures and documentationLeadership & OversightProvide daily workflow oversight, assign tasks, and review work for accuracyMentor and support payroll team membersServe as backup for all payroll functions as neededAudit & ComplianceReview and approve complex payroll adjustments (retro pay, terminations, off-cycle payments, etc.)Conduct payroll audits, reconciliations, and resolve discrepanciesPartner with HR, Finance, Compliance, and Labor Relations on escalated matters
