What You'll Do As a Patient Financial Counselor, you are is responsible for assisting patients in the process of completing financial assistance applications, educating them about their financial responsibility, and helping them identify a path toward resolving their balances. This position also acts as a liaison between customer service and the patient answering billing questions as they arise. This position involves communicating with patients in person, over the telephone and via written communication requiring the highest level of customer service.
Patient Financial Counselor Job Responsibilities:
Conduct financial screenings to identify uninsured and underinsured patients who may qualify for financial assistance, Medicaid, Medicare, or other government-sponsored programs. Provide patients with personalized estimates of out-of-pocket expenses, financial obligations, and available assistance options prior to and following services. Assist patients with enrollment in financial assistance programs and ensure applications are complete, accurate, and supported by required documentation. Collaborate with social workers, eligibility vendors, and payer representatives to maximize reimbursement opportunities and secure appropriate coverage for patients. Review patient eligibility for financial assistance programs and ensure compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements. Educate patients on insurance benefits, coverage limitations, billing statements, payment responsibilities, and available payment options. Establish and manage payment arrangements, including payment plans, collections efforts, and resolution of outstanding patient balances. Identify and obtain required patient acknowledgements, waivers, and notices related to financial responsibility and non-covered services. Document all patient interactions, payer communications, financial counseling activities, collection efforts, and payment arrangements in appropriate systems. Collect and process patient payments, maintain accurate financial records, and prepare deposits in accordance with organizational procedures. Monitor regulatory, insurance, and reimbursement changes that may impact patient financial services and collections practices. Perform administrative duties including recordkeeping, documentation, filing, reporting, and processing financial assistance paperwork. Deliver exceptional customer service by helping patients navigate healthcare costs and access available financial resources. Participate in departmental projects, process improvement initiatives, and other duties as assigned. What You Bring As a Patient Financial Counselor, this position requires strong knowledge of UB04 and CMS1500 claim forms, 837i/837p billing requirements, third-party payer regulations, and government reimbursement policies. The ideal candidate possesses excellent organizational skills to manage claim submissions, strong customer service abilities to maintain professional interactions, and proficiency with computer systems and software applications, including Microsoft Office, to support efficient revenue cycle operations. Required Qualifications The knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a High School Diploma. Previous experience in customer service or a related field is preferred. An advanced degree is preferred. General knowledge of insurance.
