A Tax Specialist is responsible for documenting all stages of the accounting cycle in order to prepare Federal, State and local tax returns. Will review data prior to preparing the returns, prepare and file returns and will also provide background documentation in case of an audit.

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Property Tax Specialist. This position is ideal for someone who is looking to start a career in the Finance Department. This position is responsible for accurate and timely billing of all City of Aberdeen real estate and personal property taxes. Responsible for all tax-related billings. Prepares, prints, and mails tax bills in accordance with departmental procedures. Prepares late notices, supplemental bills, and other necessary statements. Follows up on delinquent accounts, as necessary. Enter tax payment data and post to customers' accounts. Reconciles to daily bank statement. Update City database based on monthly State assessment change reports (additions/deletions). Reissue tax bills as needed or issue refunds. Create tax bill revisions for tax credits issued. Personal Property billing. Updates name changes and billing addresses in the City's database from State monthly report. Quarterly survey for property tax collections. Update E-license for business license renewal. Run delinquent report monthly and email to lenders. Provides the Finance Supervisor with daily reports to assist with uploading data to the General Ledger. Maintains records of delinquent accounts and coordinates with counterparts in the County/State tax offices to carry out year-end property tax sales. Prepares and sends out notifications to taxpayers and advertises tax sales. Prepares tax certification letters and sends out request forms. Process deeds through Simplifile Records all land transfers as recorded by the County, which coordinates efforts with Utility Billing Specialist as needed. Renews business licenses and ensures that taxes are paid prior to renewal. Reviews daily deposit tickets and counts cash prior to it being taken to the bank. Fills in for Collections Specialist as necessary and provides support to other department members by answering telephones and fills in with utility billing. Cross trains with other staff members as assigned.
Requirements:
1 -2 years in accounting, finance, or tax related position preferred High school diploma or GED equivalent Communication skills; teamwork; customer service Working knowledge of accounting principles, fiscal management, and administrative office procedures Basic understanding and knowledge of tax processes and procedures and the ability to use a personal computer and related financial management software. Must be proficient in general computer operations Position requires organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
