Job Description

Performs cashiering, clerical, and some accounting functions for the La Plata County Treasurer's office and ensures that financial transactions/records are accurately maintained, reviewed, and processed. This position acts as the primary point of contact to assist customers and answer questions. Essential functions may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks. Reasonable accommodations, as defined under the American with Disabilities Act, will be made when possible. Assists the public in-person, on the phone, via e-mail, and mail. Collects monies and issues receipts for the public related to property tax payments, fines, and fees. Provides accurate and time sensitive financial information by phone to the public and returns calls to customers who leave messages. Processes physical and electronic receipts, such as cash, checks, e-checks, credit cards, and other electronic funds received, ensuring that relevant data and accounts are correct and complete. Issues receipts for all in-person transactions and upon request for transactions processed through the mail. Saves all documents and backup as needed for audit review. Opens, closes and balances cashiering tills; prepares and processes daily electronic check and cash deposits with a high degree of accuracy. Generates reports out of the county Tyler system as part of the daily closing process. These reports will be verified on a daily basis by the Deputy Treasurer. Enters and verifies data in the computer system (Tyler) to maintain accurate information for tax roll records. Performs various support duties including scanning, copying, printing, shredding, and mailing materials. Processes releases of deeds of trust in person, through the mail and through online applications. Researches and signs legal documents, collecting any public trustee funds due. Ensures all statutory documents are included in the files. Ensures compliance with state-mandated reporting and processing deadlines. Responsible for staying informed of any and all changes in new legislation, laws, statutes, forms and regulations mandated by both the State and County. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Performs other related duties as required.
MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED
Computer and Software General Office Equipment Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities for this position would be:
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or GED; and, One year of related experience in a cashiering, accounting, or general business/finance environment; or, Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Licenses and Certifications:
None Knowledge of:
Basic cashiering, bookkeeping and/or accounting practices. General office procedures, policies, and practices, as well as basic knowledge of computer and other general office equipment. Basic spreadsheet (Excel) and word processing (Word) tools.
Skill in:
Using tact, discretion, initiative, and independent judgment within established guidelines. Applying logical thinking to solve problems or accomplish tasks; to understand, interpret and communicate complicated policies, procedures, and protocols. Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up assignments with minimal direction. Customer service techniques Communicating clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to:
Perform highly detailed work in a fasted paced environment accurately. Maintain a courteous and helpful manner in dealing with the public. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals. Read and interpret documents such as rules, statutes, forms, and procedure manuals.
