Job Description

Posting Details Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within one week of closing date. Applicant use of Artificial Intelligence tools is prohibited during interviews. Please make sure to attach transcripts to certify degree (If Applicable) and accounting hours that are required. Why does the job exist? The purpose of this position is to review tax documents to assure legal compliance, accuracy of computations, conduct tax refunds, adjustments, customer service and other tax related activities, and to include return and payment correction in Business Taxes (Gross Receipts Tax, Compensating Tax, Withholding Tax), and Worker's Compensation Fee. How does it get done? This position will examine and review taxpayer return and records for appropriate tax reporting documents and computations. Review, implement, and/or request tax adjustments, cancellations, etc. Routinely prepare and issue documents and or standard notices to taxpayers and/or other parties to comply with tax laws, policies and procedures. Examine tax documents to detect and resolve tax reporting errors and/or discrepancies and recommend corrective action. Prepare appropriate forms and/or reconciliation to activate corrective action. Review computer reports for accurate and coordinate with supervisor on complex problems. Reconcile accounting of tax/revenue transaction reports to assure accuracy and balance of fiscal or annual date. Assist in research of tax records and compilation of tax/refund date for incorporation in financial reports. Prepare periodic reports in receipts, assessments, and/or other routine tax/revenue activities. Review records of taxpayers and contact taxpayer to obtain information on receipts of taxes due. Review and mentor new employees. Verify entered data against source documents to identify and correct errors. Perform mathematical calculations to verify and/or balance documents. Provide telephone assistance to taxpayer inquiries regarding tax reporting errors and/or discrepancies to take correction action. Who are the customers? This position serves taxpayers of the State of New Mexico Ideal Candidate This position serves taxpayers of the State of New Mexico Minimum Qualification High school diploma or equivalent plus six (6) semester hours in accounting, finance, or tax-related field and two (2) years of experience in bookkeeping, accounting, finance, auditing, collections, and/or tax-related field. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience. One (1) year of direct experience in bookkeeping, accounting, finance, auditing, collections, and/or tax-related field may substitute for the required semester hours. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must be current with all tax reporting/payment. Employment is subject to post offer pre-employment criminal background check to include fingerprint checks and is conditional pending results. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage.
