Tax Manager / Tax Director — Tax Practice Leader - Path to Equity Ownership Rose Group CPAs, PLLC | Chapel Hill North Carolina | Hybrid Rose Group CPAs is seeking an experienced Tax Manager or Tax Director to lead the day-to-day operations of our tax practice. This is not a traditional tax-manager position. We are looking for an experienced CPA who wants the opportunity to run an established tax practice, develop a team, shape how the department operates, and potentially grow into equity ownership. Rose Group already has the clients, staff, systems, technology, administrative infrastructure, and established brand. The Managing Director will remain involved at the strategic level, including firm leadership, complex tax matters, planning, technology, and quality oversight. The Tax Practice Leader will be responsible for running the tax department day to day. For the right person, this role is intended to develop into a significant leadership position within the firm with a pathway toward profit participation and ultimately equity ownership. The Opportunity The Tax Practice Leader will assume responsibility for managing an established tax practice preparing approximately 600 returns annually. The role includes oversight of workflow, staff, client relationships, return review, technical quality, deadlines, and department profitability. You will have meaningful authority to improve processes, develop staff, evaluate technology, and help determine how the tax practice grows. You will not be expected to build a practice from zero or operate without support. Rose Group provides centralized administrative support, technology, marketing, billing systems, and firm infrastructure. We are looking for someone who enjoys both the technical side of tax and the responsibility of leading a business unit. Key Responsibilities The Tax Practice Leader will: Lead the tax department's day-to-day operations and workflow. Manage and develop tax staff, preparers, and seasonal or contract professionals.

Provide technical guidance to staff and resolve complex tax issues. Manage client relationships and communicate directly with business owners and high-net-worth individuals. Oversee workload, scheduling, extensions, deadlines, and quality control. Participate in tax planning and advisory engagements. Help establish and monitor department capacity, realization, profitability, and service standards. Improve tax processes, procedures, and use of technology. Participate in hiring, training, and performance management for the tax team. Work with firm leadership on pricing, client acceptance, service offerings, and growth strategy. Develop referral relationships and participate in appropriate business-development activities. Help shape the long-term direction of Rose Group's tax practice. Experience We Are Seeking The strongest candidate will have: CPA license required. Approximately 10 or more years of public accounting tax experience. At least 5 years of meaningful tax return review experience. Experience supervising or managing tax professionals. Strong experience with complex individual income tax returns, including high-net-worth clients. Experience with partnerships and S corporations. Experience with C corporations. Experience with trusts and estates. Experience with multistate taxation. Tax planning and advisory experience. Strong client-management and communication skills. The ability to make decisions independently and take ownership of a department. Experience with international taxation, private equity, venture-backed companies, or sophisticated ownership structures is a plus but is not required. Leadership and Ownership Path Our objective is to identify someone who can become the long-term leader of the Rose Group tax practice. The initial position will be Tax Manager or Tax Director, depending on experience. During the first phase, the successful candidate will assume increasing responsibility for department operations, staff leadership, client management, technical review, and financial performance. As the relationship develops and demonstrated leadership and performance milestones are achieved, the opportunity may progress to: Tax Practice Leadership → Profit Participation → Equity Ownership The specific timing and structure of any ownership opportunity will depend on performance, leadership capability, cultural fit, and mutual agreement. Compensation Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience, technical ability, leadership background, and the level at which the successful candidate joins the firm.
