Job Description

Senior Tax Manager Tax Director Lagrange, IN area Hybrid

•There are plenty of Senior Tax Manager jobs where the next step is... being a Senior Tax Manager for another five years. This one has a bit more going for it. You'd be joining an independent CPA firm that's been established for more than 30 years, working with a long standing client base and an experienced team. They're looking for someone senior who can come in, take ownership of client relationships and gradually become a bigger part of where the firm goes next. You don't need to arrive wanting to run the place on day one. There's an experienced CPA Partner who has been with the firm for more than 10 years, knows the clients incredibly well and will be working alongside you. The operational side of the business is also well supported, so your time can stay focused on clients, technical work and developing the people around you. The work is broad, which is probably one of the more interesting parts of the role. Around half of the firm's revenue comes from tax, with the rest largely sitting within CAS. On the tax side, you'll work with privately owned businesses and their owners, including a particularly strong client base across agriculture, farming and manufacturing. These aren't clients you'll only hear from when a deadline rolls around either. A lot of the relationships go back years, so there's plenty of planning, advisory work and actual conversation involved. If you're currently a Senior Tax Manager who feels ready for more responsibility, they can give you that. Equally, if you're already at Director or Partner level but would prefer a smaller independent firm where your ideas actually have some weight, there's room for that too. And there's a pretty meaningful longer term opportunity. From your second year, there's the potential to earn equity in the firm. So rather than joining somewhere with a slightly shinier title but essentially doing the same job, you could be building towards having an actual stake in the practice you're helping grow. They're also investing in technology and AI to make the firm more efficient, rather than accepting that long hours are simply part of public accounting forever. Leadership doesn't want a culture where 60+ hour weeks become the norm. Outside of busy season, you'll typically be in the office four days a week, with some flexibility built around that. I think this role probably suits someone who likes public accounting and likes working with clients, but wants a little more influence over what their career eventually turns into. You might want Partnership. You might like the idea of equity. Or maybe you've just reached the point where you'd rather work somewhere independent where you can actually make a difference. Either way, it's worth a conversation. If you're just browsing the job boards and you haven't dusted off your resume yet, that's not a problem. You can give me a call first on 312-564-5028. If you prefer, you could drop me a connection or message on LinkedIn (Lucy Weibel at Distinct), and we can pick things up there. If you've read this advert and you're unsure whether to apply because you don't have every bit of experience listed, I'd still encourage you to apply. We support the CPA firms we partner with in building diverse, inclusive and equitable workplaces, and the right attitude often goes further than ticking every box. If this position isn't quite right, it's highly likely I'll be working on another Public Accounting opportunity that is.
