Job Description
About Valley Peak Most people end up piecing together financial advice from a CPA, a financial advisor, and a bookkeeper who never talk to each other. Valley Peak was built to fix that. We bring tax preparation and planning, business accounting and controller work, personal financial planning, and investment advisory into one coordinated relationship, so a decision in one area accounts for its impact everywhere else. A tax strategy considers the client's investment portfolio. A controller engagement considers the owner's personal tax exposure. We maintain a relatively small base of clients to whom we deliver exceptional service. Our clients are established business owners and individuals who have outgrown DIY or piecemeal advice and want a long-term advisor who understands the whole picture, not just this year's return. We are not built for one-time filings, and we hire accordingly. We are a growing firm in Durham with two practice areas under one roof: tax and accounting, and investment advisory. The role As Tax Manager, you will oversee individual and business clients from planning through filing, and you will review the work of our tax staff. This is a client-facing role. You will be the person clients call when they are weighing tax questions...an equipment purchase, a change in entity structure, an appreciated equity or real estate sale, estimated tax payments, etc. You will be expected to give them an answer they can act on, either by your own knowledge and research, or with the help of the accounting and/or investment advisory team. This is a dedicated tax role. Controller and outsourced accounting engagements sit with a separate team, so your focus stays on tax planning, compliance, and client advisory work. What you will do Prepare and review individual, partnership, S-corp, and C-corp returns, along with the supporting workpapers Build forward-looking tax projections and recommend specific moves to reduce a client's tax exposure Review returns previously filed by other preparers and amend them when the numbers call for it Calculate withholding and quarterly estimated payments, and keep clients ahead of their deadlines Advise on entity structure and the tax consequences of business decisions, including expansions, equipment purchases, and owner compensation Coordinate with our investment advisory team on the tax impact of portfolio changes and charitable giving strategy Review the work of staff and senior accountants, give useful feedback, and help them get better Serve as a primary point of contact for your clients throughout the year, not only during filing season Research technical issues and document your conclusions clearly enough that a colleague can follow them What we are looking for Active CPA license Eight to twelve years of tax experience in public accounting, including some experience reviewing other preparers' work Hands-on experience with pass-through entities (partnerships and S-corps) and closely held business returns, plus the individual returns of the owners behind them Comfort explaining a technical answer in plain language to a smart business owner who is not a numbers person Experience with Intuit ProConnect Tax, or a comparable professional tax platform you can transition from, plus strong Excel skills Familiarity with Canopy, or a comparable practice management system, is helpful; Multi-state filing experience Experience mentoring or formally supervising staff
