Job Description

Tax Manager Richmond, VA $125,000 - $160,000 + bonus There are two reasons most Tax Managers start looking elsewhere. The first is obvious. Compensation. The second is far more common. They've stopped learning. Not technically. Public accounting rarely allows that. But commercially. Strategically. Professionally. The work becomes predictable. The client conversations become repetitive. The path ahead starts looking exactly the same as the last five years. That's what makes this opportunity interesting. This is a firm that has continued to grow because it's invested heavily in helping clients solve problems, not simply process tax returns. As a result, Managers are expected to be advisors, relationship builders, and leaders, not just reviewers. For the right person, that's where the role becomes genuinely rewarding. Why they're hiring Growth is creating the opportunity. The tax practice continues to attract new clients across a broad range of industries, and leadership wants to ensure they maintain the level of service and responsiveness that helped build the firm's reputation in the first place. They're not looking for someone to sit quietly in the background reviewing work. They need someone who can become a trusted presence for both clients and staff. Someone who enjoys helping develop people. Someone who can identify opportunities, solve problems, and bring confidence to complex situations. The technical expertise matters. But at this level, it's rarely the thing that separates good Managers from great ones. What the role actually looks like The client portfolio is broad, which means you'll avoid becoming overly specialised unless that's something you actively want. You'll work with: Privately owned businesses Multi generational family businesses Professional service firms Real estate groups Manufacturing companies High net worth individuals Some engagements are compliance driven. Many move well beyond that. Planning, strategy, advisory work, and relationship management all become increasingly important parts of the role. That's one of the reasons many people join firms like this. You get closer to decision making. Closer to clients. And closer to understanding how businesses actually operate. Why people tend to join A lot of Tax Managers reach a point where they feel caught between two options. Stay in a smaller firm and potentially limit future opportunities. Or move to a larger firm and risk becoming another name in a much bigger structure. This opportunity tends to appeal because it offers something in the middle. The firm has significant resources, sophisticated clients, and a strong reputation across the market. At the same time, leadership remains accessible and good ideas don't disappear into layers of management. People know each other. Contributions get noticed. And the work you're doing feels connected to the success of the business rather than disconnected from it. The hybrid working model reflects that mindset as well. Flexibility exists because it works. Not because it's a recruiting slogan. The expectation is that people manage their work professionally and support their clients effectively. Beyond that, leadership tends to trust people to make good decisions. What progression actually looks like Most firms promise progression. Candidates have become understandably sceptical about that. The difference here is that growth creates opportunities naturally. The business continues to expand, new service lines continue to develop, and leadership actively invests in the people they believe can help shape the future of the firm.
Whether your ambitions sit at:
Senior Manager Director Practice leadership Business development Partner level There is genuine room to build towards those goals. More importantly, there are people within the organisation who have already done exactly that. That tends to be a much better indicator than any promise made during an interview. The culture in practice Culture is difficult to fake. People either stay or they don't. Here, retention tells its own story. The environment feels collaborative without being dependent. Professional without feeling corporate. Ambitious without becoming exhausting. The firm invests heavily in training, development, and internal support because leadership understands something many organisations overlook. The better people become, the stronger the business becomes. Simple. But surprisingly effective. The result is a culture where people are encouraged to grow rather than simply survive busy season. Who tends to thrive here? Usually someone who enjoys being involved in the bigger picture. Someone who likes helping clients solve problems rather than simply deliver returns. Someone who enjoys mentoring staff and contributing to the development of a team. Most importantly, someone who still has ambition but wants to pursue it in an environment that feels sustainable long term. Because whilst the title says Tax Manager, the reality is they're looking for someone who wants to become an important part of the firm's future. Not ready with a resume? Or want a bit more information before applying? That's fine. Apply the old-fashioned way, or simply reach out to me on LinkedIn or through the Distinct Recruitment website. I'll happily talk you through the role, the firm, and where it could take you before you make any commitments. I'm Abigail Stephen, Recruiter at Distinct. I don't just look at job specs; I look at people, and where they'll thrive. It's not about filling gaps. It's about finding a fit that lasts. Outside of work, balance for me is Pilates to reset, travel to explore, and skiing to recharge. Because the truth is, you don't slog through hours for the love of a spreadsheet. You do it for the freedom it buys you. Same principle here.
