Description We are looking for an experienced Tax Preparer to support individuals and closely held businesses with accurate, timely tax filing services in San Mateo, California. This position focuses on preparing returns, guiding clients through documentation needs, and explaining filing outcomes in a clear and thorough manner. The role also offers the chance to contribute to broader tax planning and compliance efforts while working closely with colleagues to maintain high technical standards.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare federal and state income tax returns for individual clients, LLCs, and S corporations with a strong focus on accuracy and completeness.
- Examine prior-year tax filings to identify inconsistencies, carryforward items, and opportunities to improve current-year reporting.
- Communicate directly with clients to request records, clarify financial details, and gather supporting tax documentation.
- Conduct client meetings to review income sources, deductible expenses, credits, and other tax-related factors needed for return preparation.
- Present completed tax results to clients and explain filing steps, expected obligations, and applicable deadlines.
- Provide guidance across core tax matters such as compliance, planning considerations, and tax research needs.
- Submit federal, state, and local tax filings, including extensions and estimated quarterly payments, using tax preparation software.
- Partner with fellow colleagues to confirm correct application of tax rules, forms, and preparation methods before returns are finalized.
- Support the firm's long-term client service goals and contribute to a practice environment with potential for future leadership growth. Requirements
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience preparing tax returns in a public accounting or tax services environment.
- Proven ability to prepare individual income tax returns as well as returns for LLCs and S corporations.
- Strong working knowledge of federal and state tax regulations, filing requirements, and common compliance standards.
- Experience reviewing tax documents and prior filings to ensure accurate reporting and proper treatment of tax items.
- Comfortable meeting with clients and communicating complex tax information in a clear, thorough manner.
- Proficiency with tax preparation software, including experience with Lacerte or comparable platforms.
- Thorough approach with the ability to manage multiple returns, deadlines, and follow-up requests efficiently.
