Job Description

Position Summary We are seeking an experienced Tax Preparer / Certified Public Accountant (CPA) to join our accounting and tax practice. This position will be responsible for preparing and reviewing individual and business tax returns, reviewing client bookkeeping and financial records, identifying tax planning opportunities, and providing year-round accounting and advisory services to clients. The ideal candidate has strong technical tax knowledge, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to communicate tax and accounting matters clearly to business owners and individual clients. This role is well suited for a CPA who enjoys working directly with clients and providing proactive advice rather than focusing solely on tax return preparation. Primary ResponsibilitiesTax Preparation and Compliance Prepare and review federal, state, and local income tax returns for individuals and businesses. Prepare returns for S corporations, partnerships, C corporations, sole proprietorships, and other business entities. Prepare or assist with fiduciary, estate, and trust returns as needed. Review prior-year tax returns and current-year information for accuracy, consistency, and potential tax-saving opportunities. Research federal and state tax issues and remain current on changes in tax laws and regulations. Respond to client questions regarding tax notices, estimated tax payments, withholding, and other tax compliance matters. Assist with IRS and state tax notices, correspondence, examinations, and resolution matters. Calculate quarterly estimated tax payments and provide year-end tax projections. Maintain accurate and organized workpapers supporting tax return positions. Bookkeeping and Financial Review Review client bookkeeping records for accuracy and completeness before preparation of tax returns and financial reports. Review general ledgers, trial balances, balance sheets, and income statements. Identify bookkeeping errors, unusual transactions, unreconciled accounts, and necessary adjusting journal entries. Review bank and credit card reconciliations, payroll records, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets, and loan balances. Prepare and post adjusting and year-end journal entries when necessary. Work with bookkeeping staff to resolve accounting issues and improve the quality and consistency of client financial records. Review financial statements and identify trends, discrepancies, or issues requiring client attention. Assist clients in developing improved bookkeeping and accounting procedures. Tax Planning and Advisory Services Meet with clients throughout the year to discuss tax planning and business matters. Prepare tax projections and recommend strategies to reduce or defer federal and state income taxes. Advise business owners regarding entity structure, including sole proprietorships, partnerships, LLCs, S corporations, and C corporations. Evaluate reasonable compensation and payroll considerations for S corporation shareholders. Advise clients regarding retirement plans, depreciation strategies, estimated taxes, capital expenditures, and other tax-planning opportunities. Assist clients with business acquisitions, sales, ownership changes, and other significant transactions. Review business financial performance and help clients understand profitability, cash flow, margins, and other key financial indicators. Provide practical recommendations regarding budgeting, cash-flow management, business operations, and financial decision-making. Identify additional accounting, tax, payroll, or advisory services that may benefit existing clients. Develop long-term relationships with clients and serve as a trusted financial and tax advisor. Client Service Responsibilities Communicate directly with individual and business clients by telephone, email, video conference, and in-person meetings. Explain complex tax and accounting concepts in clear and understandable terms. Request and follow up on missing client information necessary to complete engagements. Manage client expectations and provide timely updates regarding the status of tax returns and other projects. Maintain confidentiality of client financial and tax information. Provide professional, responsive, and courteous client service. Develop an understanding of each client's business, financial objectives, and tax situation in order to provide proactive recommendations. Qualifications Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license preferred or required depending on experience. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Minimum of 3-5 years of professional tax preparation experience preferred. Strong knowledge of federal and state individual and business taxation. Experience preparing Forms 1040, 1065, 1120, and 1120-S. Experience reviewing bookkeeping and financial statements. Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practical small-business accounting. Experience with tax research and tax-planning strategies. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple client engagements and deadlines. High level of accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to work independently while collaborating with other accountants, bookkeepers, attorneys, payroll specialists, and administrative staff. The position requires a professional who can combine tax expertise, accounting knowledge, and business judgment to help clients remain compliant while making informed financial and tax decisions.
Pay:
$35.00 - $70.00 per hour
