We are seeking an experienced Senior Tax Preparer to lead complex tax engagements, manage client relationships, and collaborate with our accounting and advisory teams to deliver high-quality, proactive tax services. Key Responsibilities Prepare and review complex federal and state income tax returns for: Individuals (including high-net-worth and multi-state) S corporations, C corporations, partnerships, and LLCs Trusts and estates, as applicable Conduct tax planning and projections for business owners and individual clients, identifying opportunities to minimize tax and improve overall financial outcomes. Review trial balances and client financials for tax readiness; coordinate with bookkeeping staff to resolve issues and ensure clean year-end books. Research and interpret tax law and regulations; prepare clear, concise memos or explanations for clients and internal use.
Communicate directly with clients:
Lead tax return review meetings (virtual and in-person) Explain tax positions and planning strategies in plain language Respond promptly to client questions and information requests Assist in the resolution of IRS and state tax notices, audits, and correspondence. Help standardize tax preparation processes, checklists, and workpapers to increase efficiency and consistency across the firm. Mentor and review the work of junior preparers and support staff; provide guidance and training on tax technical issues and best practices. Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to firm policies and professional and ethical standards. Qualifications 5+ years of recent, hands-on tax preparation experience in a public accounting firm or similar environment.
Strong experience with:
Individual and business entity tax returns (Forms 1040, 1120, 1120-S, 1065) Multi-state filings for individuals and businesses Deep understanding of federal tax law and strong familiarity with state tax rules (especially VA and surrounding states; add
MA/MD/DC
if relevant). Proficiency with professional tax preparation software (e.g., Lacerte or equivalent) and experience working with accounting systems such as QuickBooks Online. Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret complex tax issues and communicate them clearly. Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and a client-service mindset. High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple deadlines during peak season. CPA, EA, or equivalent credential preferred; significant experience may substitute for formal licensure depending on role design.
