Longmont, Colorado About The Job:
Lakeside HR Group has been engaged by our client to recruit for a Controller to join their team. Our client is a well-established and growing organization that provides specialized services supporting infrastructure, environmental, and natural resource projects. Known for its collaborative culture and commitment to long-term sustainability, the company partners with public and private clients to deliver impactful projects that strengthen communities and preserve valuable resources. Our client is seeking a hands-on, technically strong Controller to lead the accounting function and ensure the accuracy, integrity and timely completion of financial reporting across multiple business entities. As the senior accounting leader within the organization reporting to the CFO, the Controller will have direct ownership of the month-end close process and oversee accounting across three business entities, including intercompany activity and consolidations. This individual will also provide leadership and technical guidance to a small accounting team. This is an opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys being close to the work. The successful candidate will bring strong accounting fundamentals, attention to detail and the ability to take ownership of the entire close process rather than simply overseeing it. As the organization continues to grow, the Controller will also play an important role in strengthening accounting processes and supporting future acquisitions and integration activities.
Key Responsibilities:
Own and lead the complete month-end and year-end close processes across multiple business entities, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting. Maintain a strong understanding of the general ledger and ensure transactions, reconciliations and financial statements are complete and accurate. Manage multi-entity accounting, including intercompany transactions, reconciliations and consolidated financial reporting. Oversee construction-related accounting, including work-in-progress (WIP) accounting and other industry-specific accounting requirements. Oversee treasury, daily bank activity and cashflow. Review balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries and supporting schedules, identifying and resolving discrepancies. Maintain appropriate accounting controls, processes and documentation to support accurate and scalable financial operations. Provide hands-on leadership, coaching and technical guidance to the accounting team, including a Senior Accountant and accounts payable staff. Establish clear expectations and accountability for accuracy, timeliness and attention to detail across the accounting function. Partner with leadership to provide accurate financial information and insight to support business decisions. Coordinate with external auditors and support annual audit activities. Support accounting and financial integration related to future acquisitions.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field. 10+ years progressive accounting experience with 3+ years of management experience. Strong technical accounting knowledge with demonstrated ownership of a complete month-end close process. Experience with WIP accounting required. Experience managing accounting across multiple entities, including intercompany accounting and consolidations. Construction industry accounting experience strongly preferred. Experience working in Sage Intacct preferred. Previous audit experience is a strong plus. Experience supporting acquisitions, integrations or growing multi-entity organizations is a plus. Demonstrated ability to work hands-on while also providing leadership and direction to an accounting team. Strong attention to detail and commitment to financial accuracy. Ability to identify issues, take ownership and drive work through completion.
Leadership Profile:
The ideal Controller is someone who takes ownership of the accounting function and understands that accuracy is in the details. This person will be comfortable digging into the books, asking questions and ensuring the entire close process is completed correctly. They will bring the confidence and accounting expertise to lead a developing team while remaining approachable, collaborative and willing to work alongside them. As the company grows, this individual should also be able to strengthen processes and bring greater structure and scalability to the accounting function.
