Job Description

The Whayland Company is a well-established commercial construction company serving Maryland and Delaware. We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead our accounting and financial operations and become an integral member of our management team. Position Overview The Controller will be responsible for the overall financial management of the company, including accounting operations, financial reporting, cash management, job costing, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls. This position is ideal for an experienced construction accounting professional who understands the unique financial requirements of commercial general contracting and construction management and is comfortable working closely with ownership, project managers, estimators, and field personnel. Key Responsibilities Oversee all day-to-day accounting and financial operations Manage job-cost accounting , including committed costs, actual costs, cost-to-complete, and job profitability Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements and management reports Manage work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion accounting Monitor project cash flow, billings, collections, retainage, and accounts payable Oversee accounts payable Handle accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions Prepare monthly financial statements and provide meaningful financial analysis to ownership and management Work closely with Project Managers and Senior Management to monitor project financial performance Review project budgets, change orders, commitments, and projected final costs Manage company cash flow and banking relationships Coordinate annual tax preparation and financial statement reviews/audits with outside CPAs Develop and maintain appropriate accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls Assist ownership with budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and strategic decision-making Ensure compliance with applicable tax, accounting, and regulatory requirements Lead, develop, and manage accounting staff Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, technology, and financial controls Qualifications 7+ years of accounting experience , preferably within commercial construction Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior construction accounting professional Strong understanding of construction job costing and WIP accounting Experience with percentage-of-completion accounting Strong knowledge of financial statements, cash flow, budgeting, and forecasting Experience working with commercial general contractors or construction managers strongly preferred Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred CPA is a plus but not required Strong Excel and accounting software skills Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills Ability to work independently while also functioning as a key member of the management team High level of integrity, confidentiality, and attention to detail What We Offer Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications Performance-based bonus opportunity Company-supported benefits Paid time off and holidays Retirement plan Professional and career development opportunities Opportunity to work directly with company ownership and senior management Stable, established commercial construction company with a strong regional reputation The Ideal Candidate The successful candidate will be more than an accountant.
