Job Description
Position Overview We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations of a growing specialty construction subcontractor with approximately $36M in annual revenue. This role oversees financial reporting, job cost accounting, cash management, compliance, and operational finance while partnering closely with leadership and project teams to improve profitability and scalability. The ideal candidate brings strong construction accounting expertise, leadership skills, and hands-on experience with job costing, WIP reporting, billing, and process improvement. Key Responsibilities Financial Leadership & Reporting Lead month-end close and financial reporting processes Prepare monthly financial statements, cash flow reports, and variance analysis Maintain accounting policies, internal controls, and compliance procedures Oversee general ledger, accruals, fixed assets, and reconciliations Job Costing & WIP Management Manage job cost tracking and project accounting Review budgets, change orders, and cost-to-complete forecasts Prepare and maintain WIP schedules and earned revenue reporting Partner with Project Managers to monitor margins and project performance Billing, AR & Collections Oversee AIA/progress billing and collections Ensure lien waivers, compliance documents, and billing requirements are completed accurately Monitor retainage, AR aging, and cash collections Lead weekly AR review meetings AP, Payroll & Vendor Management Oversee AP processes, approvals, and vendor compliance Supervise payroll processing and labor cost allocations Ensure compliance with prevailing wage, certified payroll, and subcontractor documentation requirements Cash Management & Compliance Manage cash flow forecasting and banking relationships Support bonding, insurance, audits, and tax filings Coordinate with external CPA firms and financial partners Maintain compliance with lending and reporting requirements Systems & Process Improvement Optimize ERP/accounting systems and reporting tools Improve workflows through automation and process improvements Support integrations with project management and payroll platforms Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance 7+ years of accounting experience with at least 3-5 years in construction accounting Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, AIA billing, cash flow management, and construction financial operations Preferred CPA or CMA designation Experience with construction ERP systems such as Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint Vista, CMiC, or Foundation Experience with Procore or similar project management platforms Skills Strong leadership and communication skills Ability to partner with operations and project teams Process-driven with a continuous improvement mindset Highly organized with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities Success Metrics Accurate and timely month-end close Strong cash flow and AR performance Effective WIP and project cost reporting Compliance with audit, tax, and bonding requirements Improved financial processes and reporting visibility Why Join Us?
