Chicagoland Area Position Overview We are a well-established insurance agency generating approximately $140 million in written premium and $25 million in annual revenue . We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead our accounting function. This role will be responsible for the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial reporting , with full ownership of the month-end close, balance sheet management, and revenue recognition processes . This is a key leadership position requiring both technical expertise and operational discipline . Key Responsibilities Financial Close & Reporting Own and manage the month-end close process from start to finish Establish and enforce a structured close calendar Deliver accurate and timely financial statements Analyze and clearly explain key variances Balance Sheet & Accounting Integrity Ensure all balance sheet accounts are reconciled on a monthly basis Review and validate reconciliations for accuracy Investigate and resolve discrepancies proactively Maintain a clear and confident understanding of all account balances Revenue Recognition & Commission Accounting Oversee commission-based revenue recognition Ensure proper accrals, timing, and alignment with business activity Reconcile carrier statements and resolve variances Maintain accuracy across all revenue streams Team Leadership & Development Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team Establish clear accountability and performance expectations Promote cross-training to strengthen team depth Eliminate single points of failure within the department Process Improvement & Automation Identify inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement Partner with IT to implement automation solutions Standardize, streamline, and document key processes Drive operational efficiency across accounting functions Internal Controls & Compliance Maintain strong internal controls across all financial processes Ensure compliance with GAAP standards Support internal and external audits Ensure readiness for reporting and regulatory requirements Qualifications Bachelor's degree in accounting (CPA preferred) 7-12+ years of progressive accounting experience Prior experience as a Controller or Assistant Controller Strong knowledge of revenue recognition and financial reporting Proven leadership and team management experience Additional Information Experience working with bilingual teams is a plus Spanish language skills are helpful, but not required What Success Looks Like A consistent, well-executed close process Accurate and reliable financial reporting Strong accountability across the accounting team Improved efficiency through process optimization and automation Benefits include: Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications Medical insurance Dental insurance Vision insurance Paid personal and sick days Short-term disability coverage Company-paid life insurance 401(k) plan with company match Accidental insurance coverage Paid training Opportunities for growth and advancement
