Job Description

Our valued client in the Elgin, IL area is seeking a Controller to join their growing construction company. Competitive pay range of $100,000 - $120,000 per year , based on experience Please note - candidates with less experience will not command the top of the range Full-time, exempt position 2 Weeks of Vacation 5 PTO days 5 Paid Holidays 401(k) plan with a company match Health insurance Core Values that promote unparalleled commitment to excellence, professionalism, and integrity Position Summary The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day financial operations, accounting accuracy, internal controls, financial reporting, and administrative oversight of a construction company. This position serves as the primary internal financial operator of the organization and works directly with owners to ensure financial information is accurate, timely, and actionable. The Controller is responsible for maintaining strong financial discipline while leading the administrative, accounts receivable and accounts payable functions assigned to the position. The Controller must be hands-on and capable of both managing and performing the weekly and monthly accounting functions required to maintain accurate books across multiple bank accounts and credit cards.
You will be responsible for:
Financial Management Managing and performing the company's day-to-day accounting functions Will be required to understand underlying transactions and not simply manage the work from a distance Banking and Cash Management Responsible for managing multiple company bank and credit card accounts Accounts Receivable Responsible for ensuring that the AR function operates consistently Managing reporting staff by establishing expectations and holding them accountable for timely collections and accurate receivables Administrative Oversight Responsible for managing assigned report staff in administrative roles and ensuring expectations have been relayed and accountability is in place Assigning staff workloads and coordinating responsibilities Improving workflows and processes and standardizing them CRM and Business Systems Coordination This position will work closely with our IT team to ensure financial workflows are accurate and properly followed by owning the financial and accounting standards within the CRM Internal Controls Responsible for developing, maintaining, and enforcing strong financial controls Will be expected to continuously evaluate the control environment and make recommendations to owners when improvements are needed Financial Reporting Responsible for preparing and maintaining timely financial reporting Will review financial performance with the owners on a regular basis and provide supporting information needed for executive decision-making Month-End Close Will completely own the month-end close process and complete it within an acceptable timeline following month-end Any Additional Projects or Duties as Needed, or Assigned Essential Requirements, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or equivalent professional experience Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting experience Minimum 3 years of accounting or administrative management experience Strong General Ledger knowledge Strong financial statement knowledge Experience managing month-end close Bank reconciliation experience Credit card reconciliation experience Accounts Receivable experience Accounts Payable experience Cash management experience Internal controls experience Job-cost accounting knowledge Experience managing and developing staff Strong organizational and communication skills Full-time, in-office availability Valid driver's license and ability to be insured on company policy Able to pass a background check and other potential checks in accordance with state and federal laws Bonus Points if You Have These Construction industry business experience CRM Software experience QuickBooks Online experience Advanced Microsoft Excel skills Payroll and HR oversight experience The Success Profile for this Role The ideal Controller for this role is a hands-on financial leader who is equally comfortable reviewing a financial statement, reconciling a bank account, coaching an administrator, managing collections, working through an accounting issue, or presenting financial information to owners. This individual must create discipline throughout back offices, establish repeatable processes, maintain accurate financial records, develop the administrative and accounting team, and provide leadership with reliable financial information. The Controller owns the financial integrity and day-to-day financial operations and is expected to build a finance and administrative organization capable of supporting our future growth.
