Supervises the quality of accounting and financial reporting within an organization, and directs preparation of reports that show the financial position of an organization.
We are a leading, established specialized commercial construction firm based in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, managing a robust portfolio of regional projects with annual revenues between $25M and $30M. We are seeking a hands-on Corporate Controller to lead our financial operations, drive strategic fiscal management, and protect our bottom line.
Position Summary:
The Controller will oversee all financial, accounting, and cash management functions of the company. Reporting directly to the Ownership/Executive team, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring strict compliance with construction accounting standards, and providing data-driven insights to guide business decisions. This position offers high-level autonomy while requiring a "roll-up-your-sleeves" approach to daily financial management and team leadership. Key Responsibilities Team Leadership & Oversight Directly supervise, mentor, and review the work of three dedicated accounting clerks (Payroll, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable). Streamline accounting workflows to ensure timely processing of weekly payroll, vendor payments, and client billings. Cross-train staff to ensure zero gaps in department coverage. Financial Management & Reporting Manage the month-end and year-end close processes, preparing accurate corporate financial statements. Oversee work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, job costing analysis, and revenue recognition unique to construction accounting (percentage-of-completion method). Manage cash flow forecasting to ensure adequate liquidity for ongoing and upcoming project mobilizations. Coordinate the preparation of corporate tax returns and financial reviews with external CPA firms. Compliance, Risk & Controls Maintain and enforce a robust system of internal controls to safeguard company assets. Oversee sales and use tax compliance, commercial insurance renewals, and corporate licensing. Monitor project compliance, including lien waivers, certificate of insurance tracking, and certified payroll filings where required.
Qualifications & Skills Required Experience:
Minimum 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience , with a strong preference for individuals who have served as a Controller or Assistant Controller in the construction or heavy industrial sectors. Deep knowledge of construction accounting fundamentals: Job costing, WIP schedules, equipment cost allocation, and contract mechanics. Proven experience managing, mentoring, and developing a small accounting team. High proficiency in construction management and accounting software (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, QuickBooks Enterprise, or similar) alongside advanced Excel skills. We use utilize Foundations accounting
Software Education & Certifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required. CPA (Certified Public Accountant) designation is highly preferred but not strictly required for a candidate with exceptional, direct industry experience.
