Job Description
About the Company We are a growing, mid-sized trucking and transportation company operating a fleet of approximately 50-200 trucks. We are looking for an experienced Financial Controller to take ownership of our accounting and financial reporting functions and help provide the financial visibility and discipline needed to support continued growth. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who understands both the technical accounting side of the business and the operational realities of trucking. The ideal candidate is organized, analytical, proactive, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where accuracy and timely information matter. The Opportunity The Controller will be responsible for overseeing the company's day-to-day accounting operations, maintaining accurate financial records, producing timely financial statements, and developing meaningful financial reporting for ownership and management. The right person will become the financial leader of the organization and a key partner to operations and ownership. Key Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Reporting Own the company's accounting function and month-end/year-end close processes Prepare and oversee monthly financial statements, including P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow reporting Ensure financial records are accurate, complete, and maintained in accordance with GAAP Establish and maintain strong accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll accounting, and reconciliations Review financial activity and identify errors, inconsistencies, and opportunities for improvement Prepare financial reporting packages for ownership and management Financial Management Develop and monitor budgets, forecasts, and cash-flow projections Provide management with financial analysis and actionable insights Track key financial and operational metrics Help identify cost-saving opportunities and improve overall financial performance Monitor working capital, collections, payables, and cash requirements Assist ownership with financial planning and strategic decision-making Trucking / Transportation Accounting Develop a strong understanding of the company's revenue and cost structure Monitor profitability by truck, customer, route, or other relevant operating metrics Work closely with operations to understand fuel, maintenance, insurance, driver, equipment, and other transportation-related expenses Ensure accurate accounting for equipment purchases, depreciation, leases, and financing Help improve visibility into the true cost and profitability of the company's operations Leadership & Process Improvement Lead and develop the accounting team Improve accounting processes, systems, and reporting Identify opportunities to automate and streamline financial processes Work closely with ownership and department leaders to establish accountability around financial performance Coordinate with outside CPAs, tax professionals, banks, auditors, and other financial partners as needed Qualifications 5+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with prior Controller or senior accounting leadership experience Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred Strong understanding of GAAP and financial statement preparation Experience managing month-end and year-end close processes Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting/ERP systems Proven ability to build and improve accounting processes Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial leaders Experience in trucking, transportation, logistics, fleet operations, or a similar asset-intensive industry is strongly preferred What We're Looking For We are looking for someone who takes ownership . You should be comfortable operating both in the details and at the strategic level —from reconciling accounts and managing the close to explaining why profitability changed and what the company should do about it.
