Job Description

The Archdiocese of St. Louis strives to teach and share our faith, serve others, and foster unity throughout the St. Louis area. Once a part of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary's campus, the Cardinal Rigali Center in Shrewsbury, MO is today the headquarters and curia (governing body) for the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

Job Summary The Controller is a critical strategic and operational leadership role that oversees the archdiocese's accounting, budgeting and financial reporting environments. This role ensures the integrity of our financial information, strengthens the stewardship of temporal goods, delivers accurate and timely reporting, and provides team leadership and mentorship. The Controller oversees core accounting operations, leads the monthly and annual close, manages audit and compliance activities, interacts with the Archdiocesan Finance Council, and partners with senior leadership to ensure financial transparency, donor accountability, and long-term sustainability - all in support of our Catholic mission.

Job Responsibilities Accounting Operations & Close Management
  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger integrity, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll.
  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to GAAP and Archdiocesan policies.
  • Maintain a disciplined reconciliation framework, ensuring all balance sheet accounts are reconciled and reviewed on a defined cadence. Financial Reporting & Analysis
  • Prepare timely, accurate internal and external financial statements, including footnotes and supplemental schedules, that support the organization and its many missions.
  • Ensure proper accounting, tracking, and reporting of restricted and unrestricted funds in alignment with donor intent, grant agreements, and canonical requirements.
  • Support leadership with financial analysis, variance explanations, and insights that strengthen operational and strategic decision-making. Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls
  • Coordinate all aspects of the annual audit across Archdiocesan entities, including preparation of schedules, narratives, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Lead preparation/review of annual IRS Form 990 filings in partnership with external auditors.
  • Maintain and enhance internal controls, financial policies, and compliance frameworks to safeguard assets and ensure accountability. Budgeting & Stewardship
  • Play a key role in the annual budgeting process, including data compilation, review of submissions, consolidation, and reporting to the Archdiocesan Finance Council.
  • Ensure budget assumptions, allocations, and reporting support transparency, stewardship, and mission alignment. Systems, Processes & Continuous Improvement
  • Lead improvements to accounting systems, processes, and workflows to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
  • Serve as a key leader in the implementation and optimization of Infor CloudSuite Financials or other enterprise systems.
  • Champion process documentation, standardization, and automation across the finance function. Leadership & Team Development
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting team members, fostering a collaborative and Catholic mission-focused culture.
  • Provide training and guidance to staff and stakeholders on accounting policies, systems, and financial stewardship.
  • Model professionalism, integrity, and service-oriented leadership consistent with the values of the Archdiocese.
Job Requirements Education & Credentials
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required. Experience
  • Minimum 8 years of progressive accounting experience in public accounting and/or corporate or nonprofit accounting.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience leading accounting teams.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, and GAAP.
  • Experience preparing or overseeing audits, financial statements, and Form 990 filings.
  • Demonstrated support of Catholic mission and values. Technical Skills
  • Proficiency with enterprise accounting systems (Infor CloudSuite preferred).
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical capabilities.
  • Ability to produce clear, concise technical writing and financial summaries.
