Job Description

About the Role We're a growing managed IT services company in the Freehold, New Jersey area, and we're hiring for a Financial Controller position. This is a hands-on role reporting directly to the owner, with responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of everything financial across a 42-person organization. There are two halves to the job. The first is the accounting function itself — AP/AR, payroll, monthly close, reconciliations, financial reporting, and recurring revenue billing through our PSA platform. You'll own it and you'll manage a small team that supports it. The second is why this role exists at all. Our financial reporting tells us what we billed. It does not yet tell us clearly which services make us money, what it costs us to deliver a unit of each one, or which clients are genuinely profitable. We need someone who can build that visibility and then use it — sitting with the owner and the sales team to decide what we push, what we reprice, and what we stop selling. If you want a role where you close the books and hand a P&L to the owner, this isn't it. If you want to shape what the business sells and how it prices, keep reading. We run a technology-company billing model — recurring agreements, licensing, hardware procurement, per-user service billing. Understanding that model matters far more to us than experience with any particular system. What You'll Own — Accounting Monthly close and preparation of financial statements Accounts payable and accounts receivable, including client collections and payment plans Payroll processing and related reporting Bank, credit card, and merchant services reconciliations The full invoicing cycle, including recurring agreement billing and reconciliation between the PSA and the accounting system Managing a small team, holding them to accuracy and deadlines, and building redundancy so no single process depends on one person Working with our outside CPA firm on year-end and tax preparation, and organizing what they need before they ask for it Structure and integrity of the chart of accounts and the P&L, so reporting is organized around how the business actually operates Where You'll Have the Biggest Impact — Finance Leadership Build and own service-line profitability reporting — revenue, cost, and margin by service, and by client Build up the unit cost of delivering each service, including allocation of shared labor, and keep it current Own the reporting rhythm with ownership: a monthly review, a mid-month check on where we stand, and scorecards that show performance and trend over time rather than a single month in isolation Set financial goals with the owner and then drive the plan that gets there, including working directly with the sales team to focus effort on the services where we actually make money Bring pricing recommendations forward — where we're underwater, where we're leaving money on the table, and what a defensible rate should look like Cash flow forecasting, budgeting, and cash management alongside ownership Own the templates and process behind client agreements and proposals, so pricing and terms are consistent and current Keep the service catalogue accurate and aligned across both the accounting system and the PSA, so the reporting built on top of it holds up Build financial and sales reporting out of the PSA, including with AI tooling where it saves time Requirements Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance Minimum five years as a Controller Minimum three of those years in technology, managed services, or IT services Strong QuickBooks experience Experience with a PSA platform — ConnectWise & Ninja RMM + other tools — and a working understanding of agreement-based and recurring revenue billing Demonstrated people management experience Meaningful experience with cost and margin analysis: you've built up the cost of delivering something and used it to change a price or kill a product line Comfortable disagreeing with ownership on a pricing or spending decision, and doing it with numbers Real attention to detail, and the judgment to know when a number is wrong before anyone else does CPA preferred, not required
