About the Role The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in managing the company's accounting operations, financial controls, compliance processes, and monthly close. This role is both strategic and hands-on, maintaining responsibility for key accounting functions while providing direct supervision, training, and oversight of the accounting team. The Assistant Controller ensures accuracy, timeliness, compliance, and consistency across accounts payable, accounts receivable, job cost accounting, and construction compliance. This position serves as a working manager, stepping in during workload peaks while driving process improvements and accountability. What You'll Do Accounting Operations & Financial Oversight Support the Controller in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations across AP, AR, job cost accounting, and compliance Review and approve accounting transactions for accuracy, coding, and documentation Ensure adherence to internal controls, accounting policies, and company procedures Assist with month-end close activities including account reconciliations, accruals, and review of job cost reports Serve as backup for critical accounting functions as needed Accounts Payable & Receivable Oversight Supervise and support the Accounts Payable Specialist Review AP batches, subcontractor pay applications, and vendor invoices prior to final approval by utilizing the AP list and AR collections reports Ensure proper job, cost code, tax, and documentation accuracy Monitor AP aging, retainage, and payment schedules Assist with complex vendor issues, research discrepancies, and resolve escalated AP matters Accounts Receivable & Billing Oversight Supervise the Accounts Receivable Specialist Review monthly client billings, pay applications, and change orders for completeness and accuracy Ensure required backup documentation (lien waivers, compliance, approvals) is obtained prior to billing Monitor AR aging, collections, and cash application Assist with resolving billing disputes and client payment delays Construction Compliance & Documentation Oversee contract documentation, lien waiver tracking, and compliance processes Ensure W9s, COIs, licenses, bonding, and preliminary notices are properly collected and maintained Support monthly pay application compliance packages Review contract terms and flag issues or risks to the Controller Assist with audit requests and job closeout documentation Team Leadership and Management Directly supervise and manage performance of AP and AR staff Prioritize workloads, assign tasks, and ensure deadlines are met Train and cross-train team members to support redundancy and coverage Provide guidance, coaching, and feedback to improve accuracy and efficiency Escalate staffing or performance issues to the Controller as appropriate Systems, Reporting, & Process Improvement Maintain and improve accounting workflows within Sage 100 Contractor and Procore Identify inefficiencies and recommend process improvements Assist with system updates, testing, and implementation of new controls Support financial reporting and special projects as assigned by the Controller Additional Responsibilities Serve as acting lead in the Controller's absence for day-to-day accounting matters Maintain confidentiality of financial and personnel information Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned What We're Looking For Required Qualifications 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in construction accounting Strong understanding of: Job cost accounting Accounts payable and receivable Lien waivers, retainage, compliance requirements Experience supervising or mentoring accounting staff Proficiency with Sage 100 Contractor, Procore, and Microsoft Excel Excellent attention to detail, organization, and follow-through Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally Preferred Qualifications Experience with AIA contracts and construction billing formats Audit or CPA firm interaction experience Notary certification (or willingness to obtain) Core Competencies Leadership & accountability Process ownership and controls Problem-solving and escalation judgment Time management across multiple priorities Accuracy, compliance, and documentation integrity Why Join Insight Construction?
