As our organization continues to grow, we are strengthening our accounting and financial reporting capabilities and are seeking an experienced accounting professional to work closely with our Controller. Position Overview Mr. Excavator is seeking an experienced Assistant to Controller with a strong accounting foundation and a thorough understanding of construction accounting, job costing, Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, fixed assets, and depreciation . This is not a transaction-processing position. We have dedicated personnel responsible for Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll. The Assistant to Controller will work alongside those team members while focusing on higher-level accounting functions and providing direct support to the Controller. This position will play an important role in maintaining the accuracy of our financial records, preparing and analyzing construction WIP reports, reviewing job costs, managing fixed-asset accounting and depreciation schedules, performing reconciliations, supporting month-end and year-end close, and improving accounting processes and financial controls. The ideal candidate understands not only how to perform accounting tasks, but how the pieces of a construction company's financial operations fit together . Key ResponsibilitiesConstruction Accounting & WIP Reporting Prepare, maintain, and analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and reports Review project costs, contract values, change orders, billings, estimated costs to complete, and projected profitability Assist with calculation and review of overbillings, underbillings, earned revenue, and percentage-of-completion calculations Review job-cost reports for accuracy and completeness Monitor project financial performance and identify unusual cost trends or discrepancies Work with Project Managers and management to obtain accurate project forecasts and cost-to-complete information Review committed costs and outstanding project obligations Help ensure revenue and expenses are recognized in the appropriate accounting periods Assist with project financial closeout and final job-cost reconciliation Research discrepancies between project management information, job-cost records, billings, and the general ledger Provide management with accurate project-level financial information to assist with operational and financial decision-making Fixed Assets & Depreciation Maintain accurate fixed-asset records and depreciation schedules Track additions, disposals, transfers, and adjustments of company assets Properly classify equipment, vehicles, machinery, technology, and other capital assets Calculate and record depreciation and related journal entries Reconcile fixed-asset schedules to the general ledger Assist with determining whether expenditures should be capitalized or expensed Maintain supporting documentation for asset purchases and disposals Work with management and outside accounting professionals regarding depreciation, asset classifications, and year-end reporting Assist with physical asset verification and reconciliation when necessary General Ledger & Accounting Maintain and review general ledger accounts for accuracy Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, reclassifications, and adjusting entries Perform detailed account reconciliations and investigate discrepancies Review transactions for proper classification, coding, and documentation Review balance sheet accounts and supporting schedules Maintain and assist with the company's chart of accounts Identify unusual transactions, inconsistencies, and accounting errors Research accounting issues and recommend appropriate corrections Ensure accounting practices are applied consistently across the organization Month-End & Year-End Close Work closely with the Controller to execute timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual closes Prepare account reconciliations and supporting schedules Prepare and review accruals, prepaid expenses, depreciation, fixed assets, and other adjusting entries Review balance sheet and income statement accounts for accuracy and reasonableness Reconcile WIP and job-cost information to the general ledger Research and resolve outstanding reconciliation items Assist with preparation of year-end schedules and financial documentation Work with outside CPAs, accountants, auditors, and other financial professionals during year-end reporting and review processes Financial Reporting & Analysis Assist the Controller with preparation of monthly and periodic financial statements and management reports Prepare supporting schedules for balance sheet and income statement accounts Analyze financial results and identify significant variances or unusual trends Perform job profitability and margin analysis Assist with company and project-level financial reporting Help identify trends in costs, margins, overhead, and project performance Prepare ad hoc financial reports and analyses requested by management Help ensure financial information provided to management is accurate, timely, and supported by appropriate documentation Reconciliations & Internal Controls Perform bank, credit card, balance sheet, intercompany, fixed-asset, and general ledger reconciliations Research and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner Review accounting activity for completeness and accuracy Assist with developing and maintaining effective internal accounting controls Identify gaps, inefficiencies, or risks within existing accounting processes Recommend and implement practical improvements to accounting procedures and workflows Assist with documenting accounting procedures and developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Audit, Tax & Compliance Support Prepare schedules and documentation for internal and external financial reviews Assist with requests from CPAs, auditors, tax professionals, banks, bonding companies, and other financial partners Maintain organized financial records and supporting documentation Assist with year-end tax and financial reporting requirements Help ensure accounting records comply with company policies and established accounting principles and procedures Accounting Team & Controller Support Work directly with and provide day-to-day accounting support to the Controller Collaborate with dedicated Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll personnel Review and reconcile information flowing from AP, AR, and Payroll into the general ledger Help troubleshoot accounting discrepancies and unusual transactions Assist in improving communication and processes between accounting functions and operational departments Work with Project Managers and company leadership regarding job-cost and financial information Assist with special accounting and financial projects as the company continues to grow Provide backup accounting support when necessary without serving as the primary AP, AR, or payroll processor Qualifications 3-5+ years of progressive accounting experience preferred Construction accounting and/or job-cost accounting experience strongly preferred Experience preparing, reviewing, or working extensively with construction WIP reports Strong understanding of job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, over/under billings, and cost-to-complete concepts Experience with fixed assets and depreciation accounting Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and financial statements Experience with month-end and year-end close Ability to prepare journal entries, accruals, and adjusting entries Strong reconciliation and analytical skills Ability to identify discrepancies and independently research their cause Advanced or strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel Experience with accounting and/or ERP systems Experience with Foundation construction accounting software is highly desirable Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered CPA certification is not required What We're Looking For We are looking for someone who understands construction accounting beyond basic bookkeeping and transaction processing . The right candidate should be able to look at a WIP report or job-cost report and understand what the numbers are telling us. They should be comfortable questioning unexpected margins, researching discrepancies, tracing transactions through the accounting system, reconciling balances, and working with Project Managers and accounting personnel to determine why something does not look right.
