Job Description

A growing Ohio custom homebuilder is seeking a hands-on, strategic Assistant Controller to oversee the company's day-to-day accounting and financial operations. Reporting directly to ownership, this individual will build upon a strong financial foundation, improve processes and reporting, and provide the insight needed to support smart business decisions. This is an opportunity to become a key member of the leadership team and help build the financial infrastructure of a rapidly growing organization.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Oversee the company's day-to-day accounting and financial operations.
  • Manage accounts payable, vendor payments, client billings and accounts receivable.
  • Maintain accurate financial records, general ledger accounts and account reconciliations.
  • Lead monthly and year-end closing processes.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting management reports.
  • Monitor cash flow and the company's overall cash position.
  • Partner with ownership on budgeting, forecasting and financial planning.
  • Oversee payroll processing for approximately 46 employees.
  • Manage employee benefits administration and related vendor relationships.
  • Ensure payroll tax filings and required reporting are completed accurately and on time.
  • Support ownership with compensation and benefits analysis.
  • Prepare meaningful financial reports for ownership and company leadership.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the company's external CPA firm.
  • Coordinate annual tax preparation and other external financial reporting requirements.
  • Assist with insurance audits, banking relationships and compliance matters.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting systems, workflows and financial processes.
  • Develop reporting tools, metrics and dashboards that support better decision-making.
  • Learn the homebuilding process and understand how projects and financial information move through the organization.
  • Partner with department leaders to strengthen efficiency, accountability and financial performance.
  • Help prepare the company's financial operations for continued expansion into new markets.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial statements.
  • Experience overseeing accounting operations and managing the month-end close process.
  • Experience with payroll, benefits administration and cash management.
  • Strong organizational, analytical and communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to maintain a big-picture perspective.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities in a growing, fast-paced environment.
  • A hands-on, ownership-oriented approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
  • The ability to communicate financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial team members.
  • A genuine interest in learning the operational side of the homebuilding business.
  • The confidence to work directly with ownership, accounting staff and department leaders across multiple markets.
  • A desire to serve as a strategic business partner—not simply manage the numbers.
  • CPA designation or public accounting experience preferred.
  • Construction, homebuilding or project-based accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience working within a growing, entrepreneurial company is a plus.
WHAT YOU'LL GET
  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Performance-based bonus opportunity.
  • Health insurance and employee benefits.
  • Paid time off and holidays.
  • Retirement plan participation.
  • Direct access to and collaboration with company ownership.
  • The opportunity to grow into a key member of the leadership team.
  • A meaningful role in shaping the financial operations of an expanding company.
  • The opportunity to join a lean, entrepreneurial team that values ownership, accountability and continuous improvement.
