Job Description
Overview We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our finance team. In this pivotal role, you will oversee the organization's accounting operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and accounting principles such as GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards). Your expertise will support accurate financial reporting, effective cash management, and robust internal controls. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in both nonprofit and governmental accounting, along with proficiency in various financial software platforms. Key responsibilities include managing the general ledger, preparing financial reports, overseeing accounts payable and receivable processes, conducting balance sheet reconciliations, and ensuring adherence to SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act) compliance. You will also play a critical role in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis to support strategic decision-making. Duties Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and IFRS standards. Manage general ledger accounting activities including journal entries, account analysis, and account reconciliation. Supervise accounts payable and accounts receivable functions to ensure timely processing and accuracy. Conduct balance sheet reconciliations and resolve discrepancies efficiently. Ensure compliance with regulatory reporting requirements for nonprofit and governmental entities. Oversee cash management activities including forecasting, liquidity analysis, and bank reconciliations. Support internal controls development and SOX compliance initiatives. Prepare detailed financial reports and analysis to inform executive decision-making. Coordinate external audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations. Utilize accounting software such as Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, or similar platforms for daily operations. Assist in budgeting processes by analyzing variances and preparing forecasts. Monitor payroll processing for accuracy and compliance with applicable regulations. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technical accounting standards including debits & credits, double entry bookkeeping, and regulatory changes. Requirements Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent certification preferred. Minimum of five years of experience in accounting roles within nonprofit, governmental, or public accounting environments. Demonstrated expertise in
GAAP, IFRS, SOX
compliance, and regulatory reporting. Proficiency with various accounting software such as Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, or similar systems. Strong understanding of financial concepts including cash management, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis. Experience with account reconciliation procedures including balance sheet reconciliation. Knowledge of technical accounting standards related to debits & credits and double entry bookkeeping. Excellent analytical skills combined with attention to detail and organizational ability. Effective communication skills for preparing financial reports and collaborating across departments.
