Full-time Position Description:
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Department Controller to oversee all accounting and financial operations related to our mortgage lending and rental property portfolio over one channel of our company, not over our whole company . This role is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, strong internal controls, and timely financial close. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership, technical accounting expertise, and hands-on experience in mortgage and real estate accounting. Key Responsibilities Financial Management & Reporting Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger, AP/AR, and cash management. Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end close processes. Analyze financial results and provide management with meaningful insights. Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls. Mortgage & Loan Accounting Oversee accounting and coordinate with the Servicing Department for mortgage loans, advances, servicing, and repurchases. Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements. Manage loan-level reporting and reconciliation. Monitor escrow, reserve, and custodial accounts. Rental & Real Estate Accounting Manage accounting for rental properties, including rent revenue, CAM, reserves, and operating expenses. Oversee property-level financial reporting and performance tracking. Coordinate depreciation schedules and fixed asset management. Support budgeting and forecasting for property portfolios. Compliance & Audit Assist with external audits, regulatory exams, and lender reviews. Serve as one of the primary contacts for auditors and regulators. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and investor requirements. Maintain documentation and audit-ready workpapers. Leadership & Team Development Manage, mentor, and develop accounting staff. Establish performance expectations and promote best practices. Support cross-department collaboration. Promote continuous process improvement. Qualifications Education & Certification Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required). CPA, CMA, or equivalent certification. Experience Minimum 5-8 years of progressive accounting experience. Prior experience in mortgage lending, loan servicing, and/or real estate accounting (preferred). Experience with rental property and portfolio accounting (preferred). Prior supervisory or management experience (required). Technical Skills Strong knowledge of GAAP and regulatory compliance. Experience with accounting/loan systems (e.g., Loan Vision, Xero, or similar). Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis). Experience with financial reporting tools and dashboards. Professional Skills Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Excellent organizational and time-management skills. High attention to detail and accuracy. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to handle confidential information with integrity. Preferred Attributes Experience with lease accounting preferred. Familiarity with HUD, GNMA, FHA, and state regulatory requirements. Experience in multi-entity or fund accounting environments. Process improvement and automation mindset. Work Environment & Expectations Full-time position. May require extended hours during close, audit, or reporting cycles.
