About Us Head Steel is a family-owned and operated steel construction company based in Portland, TN, with deep roots in the community. We specialize in a wide range of steel services, including structural steel erection and fabrication, prefabricated building assembly, shear stud installation, rigging, and expert welding. Position Summary The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial operations of Head Steel Service, including QuickBooks, bookkeeping, accounts payable/receivable, and payroll support. This position ensures accurate financial reporting, manages cash flow, maintains internal controls, supervises accounting staff, supports strategic decision-making, and provides financial insight to drive company growth. This role would be a great growth opportunity for an accounting professional ready to step into a Controller position! Primary ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts. Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable. Manage payroll processing and payroll tax compliance. Monitor company cash flow and working capital. Reconcile all bank and credit card accounts. Manage fixed assets and depreciation schedules. Job Cost Accounting Monitor job costs and project profitability. Analyze labor, material, subcontractor, and overhead costs. Compare estimated versus actual project costs. Assist project managers in improving project profitability. Prepare work-in-progress (WIP) reports. Budgeting & Forecasting Develop annual operating budgets. Prepare monthly financial forecasts. Track key performance indicators (KPIs). Assist ownership with strategic financial planning. Internal Controls Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures. Ensure compliance with GAAP. Coordinate annual audits and tax preparation. Oversee insurance renewals and financial reporting requirements. Maintain proper documentation and internal controls. Banking & Financing Manage banking relationships. Prepare reports required by lenders. Assist with financing, equipment purchases, and capital investments. Monitor debt and cash reserves. Human Resources Support Oversee payroll and employee benefits administration. Assist with health insurance, retirement plans, and workers' compensation reporting. Support onboarding and compliance documentation. Leadership Supervise accounting and administrative personnel. Improve accounting systems and workflows. Work closely with estimating, project management, purchasing, and operations. Provide financial recommendations to ownership. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required. CPA (active, inactive, or in progress) is a plus, though not required 5-10+ years of accounting or controller experience. Manufacturing, construction, or structural steel industry experience preferred. Strong knowledge of job costing and percentage-of-completion accounting. Experience with payroll, taxes, and financial reporting. Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
