Controller Northern Virginia | Full-Time | Onsite About the Organization Our client is a respected national nonprofit organization with a longstanding reputation for excellence, financial stability, and organizational impact. With a collaborative culture and a commitment to operational excellence, the organization is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its accounting function and partner with executive leadership in supporting its continued success. Position Overview The Controller will lead the organization's accounting function and ensure accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with accounting standards. This individual will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, manage the monthly and annual close processes, lead the external audit, and support strategic financial initiatives while developing and mentoring a high-performing accounting team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys both strategic leadership and hands-on involvement in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. Key Responsibilities Lead the day-to-day accounting operations and oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process. Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP. Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements. Lead the annual external audit and serve as the primary liaison with auditors. Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial processes. Monitor cash flow and support treasury management activities. Manage, mentor, and develop a collaborative accounting team. Partner with leaders across the organization to provide financial guidance and operational support. Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, and operational efficiency. Support budgeting, forecasting, and other strategic finance initiatives. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field. Active CPA license required. Previous experience as a Controller or Assistant Controller. Experience within a nonprofit organization strongly preferred. Public accounting background preferred. Demonstrated experience leading accounting teams and managing the monthly close process. Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and audit management. Excellent analytical, organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
