We are looking for an experienced Director of Accounting to lead the financial operations of our organization in Newport News, Virginia. This role is responsible for guiding accounting strategy, overseeing budget development, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and maintaining strong internal controls across the department. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of governmental accounting standards, a strong background in audit and compliance, and the leadership skills needed to develop a high-performing finance team.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the day-to-day operations of the accounting function, setting direction for financial processes, departmental priorities, and staff performance.
• Oversee the preparation of financial statements, supporting schedules, and audit documentation to ensure timely and accurate year-end reporting.
• Direct the development of the annual operating budget and capital planning efforts, while tracking spending patterns and reporting on financial performance.
• Review and authorize payments, disbursements, and other cash activities to safeguard assets and support sound fiscal management.
• Manage receipt processing, bank deposits, reconciliations, and investment activity to maintain accurate records and effective cash oversight.
• Establish and refine financial policies, procedures, and internal controls that promote compliance, accountability, and risk reduction.
• Provide financial analysis and planning support for programs, including monitoring funding availability and communicating applicable requirements to stakeholders.
• Supervise, coach, and evaluate accounting personnel, including involvement in hiring, training, work assignment, and employee development.
• Ensure adherence to applicable local, state, and federal regulations, as well as relevant accounting and audit standards.
• Prepare financial reports, correspondence, and official records needed for leadership review, regulatory compliance, and operational decision-making.
