Job Title:
Float Phlebotomist Job Description The Float Phlebotomist provides skilled blood collection and specimen preparation services across multiple locations, ensuring high-quality care and a positive experience for patients. This role requires strong technical phlebotomy abilities, excellent attention to detail, and the flexibility to travel within an assigned coverage area while maintaining professional, courteous interactions with patients of all ages. Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring minimal discomfort and a safe experience for patients. Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and test requirements. Explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to help them feel informed and at ease. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, verifying that all information is accurate and complete. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity throughout the process. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy before processing. Package specimens securely for transport and follow all protocols to preserve specimen quality during transit. Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following detailed procedures specific to each protocol. Understand and follow all applicable OSHA and DEP regulations related to safety, biohazard handling, and laboratory practices. Wear appropriate protective attire and use proper safety equipment during all specimen collection and processing activities. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to maintain a clean and safe work area. Update patient information accurately and promptly in the appropriate systems or documentation. Attend annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices. Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read or relay laboratory results as needed to address inquiries. Provide coverage across multiple sites within the designated geographic area, adapting to different locations and workflows as needed. Essential Skills 2-3 years of experience drawing blood in a clinical or laboratory setting. Proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles. Ability to properly label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test and protocol requirements. Strong administrative skills and high attention to detail for accurate documentation, labeling, and verification of test requisitions. Ability to fully understand and follow physicians' orders and laboratory protocols. Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to safety, infection control, and specimen handling. Capability to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients across a wide demographic. Competence in updating patient information and recording maintenance and decontamination data. Ability to answer telephone inquiries and communicate laboratory results accurately and professionally. Willingness and ability to travel within the assigned coverage area as a floating phlebotomist. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with pediatric and infant blood draws is a plus. Experience processing specimens, including handling multiple specimen types such as urine or fecal samples, is beneficial. Comfort working in varied locations and adapting to different clinical environments. Strong interpersonal skills to build rapport and put patients at ease during procedures. Work Environment This is a floating role that involves in-state travel and regular movement between multiple sites within the coverage area, including Beacon, Newburgh, Middletown, Peekskill, Poughkeepsie, and Ossining. The Float Phlebotomist must be available between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and will work one weekend day every other weekend from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The position offers variety and a change of scenery by supporting different locations as needed. The work environment includes clinical and laboratory settings where specimens are collected, labeled, centrifuged, processed, and prepared for transport using standard laboratory equipment. Safety is a priority, and the role requires consistent use of appropriate protective attire and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations. There are no holiday or vacation shifts required in this position, creating a predictable schedule framework while still requiring flexibility within the specified hours. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Beacon, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.
