Job Description

Background Based in New York, Dia Art Foundation is committed to advancing, realizing, and preserving the vision of artists. A nonprofit founded in 1974, Dia collects the work of some of the most renowned artists of the last half-century; presents long-term, site-specific projects; executes new commissions; and produces scholarly publications related to its exhibitions and collections. Dia Beacon is our largest location welcoming over 115,000 visitors each year. A former factory, the museum has 300,000 square feet of gallery, public-amenity, administrative, workshop, and storage space. Dia Beacon is open to the public Friday through Monday with facility and exhibition maintenance performed on its closed days, Tuesday through Thursday. Position summary The Housekeeping Attendant is part of the Dia Beacon Operations department and is supervised by the Director of Facilities, Beacon. The scope of this position is 32 hours per week and requires weekend availability. Hours may change to accommodate the needs of the department. Essential duties and responsibilities Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them; operate floor-scrubbing machines, wet/dry vacuums, and standard carpet vacuums Clean gallery floors while maintaining a 5-foot distance from the art Clean other areas as required, including offices, kitchens, public spaces, conference rooms, classrooms, corridors, entrances, exterior walkways, walls, equipment, and building fixtures Service and clean restrooms; replenish with soap, paper products, and other necessary supplies Collect and dispose of trash and other wastes; collect, sort, and dispose of recyclable materials Clean sidewalks and perform manual labor required for grounds maintenance Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas using snow shovels and snow-melting chemicals Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks, J-bars, and dollies Set up and remove tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as galas and meetings Clean and maintain equipment after use Receive and stock supplies in appropriate areas Notify managers when supplies are low, safety issues arise, and repairsare needed Work extra hours for special events or to otherwise support the Housekeeping staff (i.e. vacations) Perform related work as instructed by the supervisor Education, certification, and experience Prior experience with the essential functions of the position required Knowledge, skills, and abilities Must have the ability to read labels, follow instructions, and use cleaning equipment and products in the prescribed manner Must have the ability to stay alert to potential safety and security problems Must have the ability to work independently as well as with other team members Must have the ability to work professionally and congenially among office staff and museum visitors Working conditions and physical demands The employee in this position is required to spend 100% of their work hours walking and moving around the workplace to complete duties Physical activities include using power-cleaning equipment and hand tools, requiring frequent bending, stooping, climbing, reaching, and lifting Qualified candidates are invited to apply by completing the online job application, and attaching a resume and letter of interest.
