Job Description

Golf Course Starter Position Overview The Golf Course Starter is responsible for managing the flow of play from the first tee, ensuring that all golfers begin their rounds on time and in accordance with the daily tee sheet. This highly visible, guest-facing role is essential to maintaining pace of play, minimizing delays, and delivering an exceptional golf experience. The Starter serves as a host, coordinator, and ambassador of the golf operation-balancing outstanding customer service with firm control of tee time execution. Core Responsibilities Tee Time & Flow Management Control the start of every golfer's round by organizing and directing players to the first tee according to the tee sheet. Ensure all groups tee off at their scheduled time and maintain proper spacing between groups. Maintain an accurate and up-to-date tee sheet and monitor changes throughout the day. Combine or adjust groups (singles, twosomes, etc.) when necessary to maximize course utilization. Coordinate with the Pro Shop, Outside Services, and Starters to ensure consistent course flow. Guest Service & Communication Serve as the first point of contact at the first tee, greeting all golfers in a friendly and professional manner. Provide instructions on course routing, starting procedures, and key course locations (restrooms, halfway house, etc.). Clearly communicate daily course conditions, rules, and policies (cart rules, pin placement, pace expectations). Answer guest questions and provide assistance to ensure a smooth and enjoyable start to their round. Promote a welcoming, organized, and positive environment at all times. Pace of Play Management Set the tone for pace of play by clearly communicating expected round times and expectations before play begins. Monitor tee times and intervene when necessary to prevent delays at the first tee. Work with course marshals and outside staff to maintain proper spacing and flow throughout the day. Assist in identifying and resolving potential bottlenecks or delays early in play. Course Operations & Support Ensure the starter area is clean, organized, and properly stocked (scorecards, pencils, tees, etc.) Prepare daily materials such as tee sheets, radios, and communication tools. Assist with tournament and event operations, including staging and group coordination. [met.pga.com] Communicate weather delays, safety concerns, or operational issues to the Pro Shop or management. [fyrelakegolf.com] Support other outside service operations when needed. Expectations Ensure each tee time begins exactly at the designated time. Maintain target pace of play (example: 1 hour 30 minutes per 9 holes). Provide professional, courteous, and consistent guest service. Act as an ambassador of the club by upholding company values and standards. Maintain composure and professionalism while managing high-volume situations. Adhere to all company policies, rules, and safety procedures. Contribute to creating a memorable and seamless golf experience for every guest. Qualifications & Skills Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to balance friendliness with firm enforcement of policies and tee times. Basic knowledge of golf rules, etiquette, and course operations preferred. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, outdoor environment. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Valid driver's license (preferred). Work Environment Outdoor role located at the first tee/starter area. Requires standing for extended periods and frequent interaction with guests. Ability to lift up to 30-50 lbs may be required. Flexible schedule including mornings, weekends, and holidays.
