This is both an academic leadership position and an active teaching position . The Director will oversee the daily operation and continued development of the Massage Therapy Program while personally teaching assigned classroom, hands-on, and clinical courses. The successful candidate will be responsible for curriculum design, program management, instructor recruitment and supervision, student management, regulatory compliance, academic quality, student clinic oversight, and student success. This is not an administrative-only position. The Director must be actively involved in teaching, supervising instructors, supporting students, developing courses, and managing the daily operation of the program. Mandatory Qualifications Applicants must meet both of the following requirements: Must hold a current and unrestricted Massage Therapist License in good standing. A valid Michigan Massage Therapist License is required before beginning employment. Must have at least five years of professional experience in massage therapy education . Massage therapy education experience may include teaching massage therapy courses, developing curricula, supervising instructors, managing students, coordinating clinical education, or operating a massage therapy education program. Applicants who do not hold a valid Massage Therapist License or do not have at least five years of massage therapy education experience will not be considered. Primary ResponsibilitiesTeaching and Instruction Teach assigned massage therapy courses in classroom, laboratory, hands-on, online, and student clinic settings. Provide clear demonstrations of massage techniques, body mechanics, draping, client positioning, sanitation, assessment, treatment planning, and professional communication. Teach and reinforce professional ethics, boundaries, client safety, informed consent, and appropriate therapist conduct. Prepare lesson plans, presentations, demonstrations, assignments, quizzes, written examinations, practical examinations, and grading rubrics. Evaluate students' academic knowledge, hands-on skills, attendance, professionalism, clinical readiness, and overall progress. Provide individual coaching, tutoring, remediation, and academic support when students need additional assistance. Prepare students for program completion, graduation, the MBLEx examination, state licensure, and employment. Serve as a substitute instructor when necessary to maintain continuity of instruction. Ensure that instructional hours and course content are delivered according to the approved curriculum. Curriculum Design and Development Develop, review, revise, and maintain a comprehensive massage therapy curriculum. Ensure the curriculum complies with school policies, Michigan requirements, accreditation standards, licensing expectations, and massage therapy industry standards. Create and update course descriptions, syllabi, learning objectives, lesson plans, instructional materials, textbooks, assignments, examinations, and practical assessments. Develop courses covering massage therapy techniques, anatomy and physiology, pathology, kinesiology, professional ethics, business practices, clinical education, and MBLEx preparation. Ensure that classroom theory, hands-on practice, and clinical education are properly integrated throughout the program. Develop new courses, specialty workshops, continuing education programs, and experiential learning opportunities. Review student performance, instructor feedback, graduate outcomes, licensing examination results, and employer feedback to identify areas for improvement. Maintain curriculum maps and verify that all required academic and clinical hours are properly scheduled, delivered, documented, and completed. Recommend appropriate textbooks, equipment, supplies, massage tables, anatomical models, and other instructional resources. Program Management Manage the daily academic and operational activities of the Massage Therapy Program. Establish program goals, academic standards, instructional expectations, and performance benchmarks. Prepare and coordinate course schedules, instructor assignments, classroom usage, laboratory activities, student clinic schedules, and special workshops. Ensure that courses begin and end on schedule and that qualified instructors are available for all required instructional hours. Monitor instructional quality and consistency across all massage therapy courses. Organize and lead faculty meetings, program meetings, training sessions, and student meetings. Communicate program expectations, policies, schedules, and changes clearly to instructors, staff, and students. Identify academic, operational, staffing, or student-related concerns and implement timely corrective actions. Assist school administration with program planning, budgeting, supply purchasing, equipment planning, and resource allocation. Prepare program reports and provide regular updates to school administration. Support the school's enrollment, retention, graduation, licensure, and employment goals. Instructor Recruitment and Management Recruit, interview, evaluate, select, onboard, schedule, mentor, and supervise massage therapy instructors. Verify that all instructors meet applicable school, state, licensing, and accreditation qualification requirements. Maintain accurate instructor qualification records, licenses, certifications, résumés, transcripts, and supporting documentation. Provide new instructors with orientation, curriculum materials, teaching expectations, policies, and classroom procedures. Review instructor syllabi, lesson plans, attendance records, grade records, assessments, and required academic documentation. Conduct classroom observations and instructor performance evaluations. Provide instructors with professional coaching, training, feedback, and corrective guidance when necessary. Ensure that instructors teach the approved curriculum and follow consistent grading, attendance, safety, and documentation standards. Address instructor attendance issues, scheduling conflicts, performance concerns, student complaints, and classroom problems. Build a professional, dependable, collaborative, and student-focused instructional team. Arrange qualified substitute instructors when needed. Student Management and Academic Support Oversee student orientation, academic advising, attendance, progress, professionalism, clinical readiness, and program completion. Clearly communicate academic expectations, attendance requirements, classroom policies, clinic requirements, graduation standards, and professional conduct expectations. Monitor students who are absent, falling behind, failing courses, missing assignments, or experiencing difficulty with hands-on skills. Develop and manage academic improvement plans, attendance improvement plans, tutoring, skills remediation, and retesting when appropriate. Conduct student progress meetings and maintain documentation of advising, warnings, improvement plans, and outcomes. Address student concerns, complaints, behavioral problems, classroom conflicts, and policy violations professionally and consistently. Collaborate with school administration regarding probation, leave of absence, withdrawal, dismissal, transfer, and graduation matters. Promote student engagement, retention, academic success, professional growth, and career readiness. Confirm that students complete all required courses, classroom hours, clinical hours, assignments, examinations, practical assessments, and documentation before graduation. Student Clinic Oversight Oversee the educational quality, safety, professionalism, and daily operation of the student massage clinic. Ensure that students are academically and practically prepared before participating in clinical services. Supervise or coordinate qualified supervision of students during clinical practice. Ensure that students follow required procedures for client intake, assessment, draping, sanitation, contraindication screening, treatment planning, SOAP notes, and client communication. Monitor student professionalism, punctuality, dress code, hygiene, phone use, client boundaries, and clinical documentation. Review clinical records and ensure that all required documentation is accurate, complete, confidential, and submitted on time. Address client complaints, student performance concerns, safety issues, and clinical incidents. Ensure that clinic hours are properly documented and counted toward program completion requirements. Coordinate with clinic staff to create a consistent and professional learning environment. Compliance and Accreditation Ensure that the Massage Therapy Program complies with applicable Michigan requirements, school policies, accreditation standards, licensing expectations, and professional standards. Maintain accurate curriculum records, instructor files, student progress records, attendance documentation, clinic records, examination results, and program reports. Monitor changes in massage therapy education, licensing, testing, and regulatory requirements. Assist with school and program applications, renewals, approvals, audits, accreditation reviews, and site visits. Prepare required reports, exhibits, policies, curriculum documentation, faculty qualification records, and student outcome information. Respond to requests from school administration, regulatory agencies, licensing authorities, and accrediting organizations. Identify compliance concerns and work with school administration to correct them promptly. Maintain student and faculty confidentiality and follow all applicable record-management policies. Career Development and Community Partnerships Develop relationships with massage clinics, spas, chiropractic offices, wellness centers, healthcare providers, and other employers. Create internship, externship, employment, guest-teaching, and collaborative learning opportunities for students. Invite qualified professionals to participate in workshops, demonstrations, career events, and guest lectures. Support students with résumé preparation, interviews, professional communication, job-search strategies, and workplace expectations. Collect employer feedback and use it to improve curriculum and student preparation. Promote the Massage Therapy Program within the professional and local community. Required Knowledge and Skills Strong knowledge of massage therapy education and hands-on instructional methods. Ability to teach both academic and practical massage therapy courses. Strong knowledge of massage techniques, anatomy and physiology, pathology, kinesiology, professional ethics, sanitation, contraindications, client safety, and clinical documentation. Knowledge of the MBLEx examination and massage therapist licensing process. Demonstrated experience with curriculum development, lesson planning, student assessment, and practical skill evaluation. Experience managing instructors, students, schedules, academic records, and program operations. Strong leadership, organization, communication, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities. Ability to manage difficult conversations, student complaints, instructor performance concerns, and classroom conflicts professionally. Excellent written communication skills for policies, reports, evaluations, academic advising, regulatory documentation, and institutional correspondence. Ability to maintain accurate, organized, and confidential records. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, online learning platforms, and digital student-record systems. Ability to work collaboratively with school administrators, instructors, students, regulators, employers, and community partners. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree or higher in education, health sciences, massage therapy, business administration, or a related field. Previous experience as a Massage Therapy Program Director, Department Chair, Lead Instructor, Clinical Supervisor, Education Coordinator, or School Administrator. Experience preparing a massage therapy school or program for regulatory reviews, audits, approvals, or accreditation. Experience teaching anatomy and physiology, pathology, kinesiology, massage techniques, professional ethics, business practices, clinical courses, or MBLEx preparation. Familiarity with Michigan massage therapy licensing requirements and proprietary school regulations. Experience with faculty evaluation, student clinic management, academic scheduling, student retention, and educational compliance.
