Overview We are seeking a dedicated and dynamic Activity Therapy Director to lead our therapeutic recreation programs across diverse care settings. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in developing and implementing innovative activity programs tailored to individuals with various needs, including adolescents, individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health conditions. This leadership role requires a compassionate professional committed to enhancing quality of life through engaging, therapeutic activities that promote physical, emotional, and social well-being. The Activity Therapy Director will oversee program development, staff supervision, and compliance with healthcare regulations, ensuring a person-centered approach that fosters dignity and independence for all clients. Duties Design, develop, and implement comprehensive therapeutic recreation programs that incorporate music therapy, dance therapy, art therapy, yoga, equine therapy, swimming, and other modalities tailored to client needs. Lead and supervise activity staff by providing training, mentorship, and performance evaluations to ensure high-quality service delivery. Conduct patient assessments to determine individual interests, abilities, and therapeutic needs; utilize findings to customize activity plans accordingly. Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams—including nursing, social work, behavioral health specialists, and medical staff—to integrate activity programs into overall care plans. Manage documentation processes in compliance with HIPAA regulations; maintain accurate medical records and activity logs reflecting client progress and participation. Facilitate group therapy sessions such as behavioral management groups, mental health counseling groups, and specialized sessions for clients with autism or PTSD. Oversee intake procedures for new clients; evaluate their needs to develop appropriate therapeutic interventions aligned with their goals. Implement de-escalation techniques during challenging situations; ensure safety protocols are followed to maintain a secure environment for clients and staff. Collect data on program outcomes; analyze trends to improve service quality and demonstrate program effectiveness through reports and case management documentation. Promote a positive team environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, and continuous improvement in therapeutic practices. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy, Psychology, Social Work, or related field; advanced certifications in art therapy, music therapy, dance/movement therapy preferred. Proven experience in program development within healthcare settings such as nursing homes, behavioral health hospitals, assisted living facilities, or hospice care. Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, patient assessment techniques, and documentation standards including HIPAA compliance. Demonstrated expertise working with individuals with disabilities—including developmental delays—and those experiencing mental health challenges such as dementia or addiction issues. Strong leadership skills with experience supervising multidisciplinary teams; ability to foster a collaborative work environment. Familiarity with de-escalation techniques and crisis management strategies to ensure safety during difficult situations. Experience working with adolescent patients and understanding the unique needs of elderly populations is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills for client engagement as well as reporting to healthcare professionals; proficiency in data collection and analysis for program evaluation.
