Job Description

Pediatric hospital located in Birmingham, AL serving the hearing needs of children from birth to age 21 years 1 position available The position will allow the opportunity for a well-rounded pediatric externship. Children's of Alabama has two main divisions in our Hearing and Speech Center- diagnostic (medical) audiology and HEAR Center (habilitative audiology). The diagnostic division of Hearing & Speech department is housed inside the main hospital as well as our two satellite facilities. The audiologists conduct outpatient hearing evaluations, AEP testing (sedated and unsedated), inpatient evaluations, pediatric vestibular evaluations, NBHS, cleft palate and craniofacial clinic, medical autism clinic, international adoption clinic and ENT clinic. The HEAR Center manages children with various types/degrees of hearing impairment through hearing evaluations, hearing aid fittings, BAHAs, FM systems, cochlear implant candidacy, evaluations, fitting, and programming. Completion of graduate work in an accredited audiology program working toward an AuD degree 40-hour work week at assigned facility Pediatric experience in graduate school preferred

May/June 2027 Expected hours/days a week: 40 Travel to satellite centers required? Yes The extern may occasionally have to travel no more than 10-15 miles to a satellite center for coverage.

Yes Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: Basic audiometric testing; masking; immittance measurements; standard ABR tests; hearing aid fittings/verification; effective report writing skills Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: Effective pediatric hearing evaluations of ages birth to 21 years of age; Ability to perform electrophysiologic testing and interpretation of results; Pediatric hearing aid selection/verification/fitting; Familiarity with cochlear implant candidacy requirements, evaluation, and programming; Equipment calibration checks; Appropriate counseling skills; Proficient report writing skills; Attend team/staff meetings; Organizational skills; Pediatric vestibular evaluations and interpretation. Yes The clinic is often involved in various research projects. Should the clinic be involved in active research during the 4th year externship, the applicant could be involved with tracking and organizing data. All research is physician directed and the audiologists conduct testing to support the research. Consortium or collaborative arrangements with other sites? No How frequently will the externship site communicate with the university during the externship? As Needed Communication or other support do expected or required from the university during the externship: Positive or negative feedback regarding extern's clinic experience. Primary supervisor will meet with the student weekly for the first quarter (then monthly thereafter) of the fellowship to review progress and skills assessments.
