The Bill Daniels Center for Children's Hearing at Children's Hospital Colorado provides the most comprehensive diagnosis and rehabilitation programs for children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing and their families in the Rocky Mountain region. Because education of graduate students in audiology and speech-language pathology is part of our mission, we enjoy sharing our experience and expertise with AuD students. The Bill Daniels Center for Children's hearing currently offers externships for fourth year AuD students. Externs receive intensive training in diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology services for infants and young children including behavioral audiometry, electrophysiological measures, advanced technology hearing aid evaluation and fitting, bone conduction sound processor fittings and evaluation and some cochlear implant and vestibular training. Students will also have the opportunity to observe several multi-disciplinary clinics. All preceptors maintain ASHA certifications, and some maintain their CH-AP certification. Students enrolled in an AuD program at an accredited university may apply for an externship at Bill Daniels Center for Children's Hearing, Children's Hospital Colorado. To be eligible for placement, students must have successfully completed their university required coursework and clinical rotations.

Yes Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: The ability to interact with children and families and motivation to learn from an experienced staff of Audiologists. Some experience with behavioral audiometry including VRA, CPA, standard audiometry, and electrophysiological measures, as well as, hearing aid fittings, verification and validation is preferred. Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: Proficient in diagnostic testing of infants and children including behavioral testing (VRA, CPA, standard audiometry) and electrophysiologic evaluations. Demonstrate competence in hearing aid consultation, fitting, verification, and validation. Independent counseling regarding identification of hearing loss, implications of hearing loss in the pediatric population and habilitative measures. Collaborate with other professionals such as early intervention providers, speech-language pathologists, and educational audiologists.
