Job Description

The fourth-year audiology externship at Essentia Health, an integrated health system headquartered in Duluth, MN with service throughout Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin, offers advanced clinical training in the diagnosis and management of hearing and balance disorders. Externs will gain direct experience in patient-centered care while working within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment that reflects Essentia's values of Quality, Hospitality, Respect, Joy, Justice, Stewardship, and Teamwork. The externship experience is primarily based at Essentia Health's main Duluth campus, with additional opportunities for community-based placements and outreach experiences to broaden their clinical training and exposure to diverse patient populations.

Yes Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: Successful candidates will have completed the third year of a Doctor of Audiology (Au.

D.) program or the second year of an accelerated Au.

D. program. In addition, they will have achieved a passing score on the Praxis Examination in Audiology as well as demonstrated steady progress toward the American Academy of Audiology core competencies before the anticipated May/June 2026 externship start date. Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: Develop advanced clinical skills in diagnostic audiology, including pediatric and adult evaluations, vestibular testing, otoacoustic emissions and auditory evoked potentials. Gain experience in the selection, fitting, and management of hearing aids, implantable devices, and assistive technology. Contribute to patient care plans as part of a collaborative health care team, with exposure to tinnitus management, auditory processing disorders, and vestibular rehabilitation. Strengthen clinical communication, patient counseling, and documentation skills. Engage in quality improvement initiatives while upholding Essentia Health's mission of making a healthy difference in people's lives.
