Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin is offering a cochlear implant focused 4th year externship for a Doctor of Audiology (AuD) student.

The AuD externship is:

A one year placement with the adult population only. Focus on cochlear implants and bone conduction implants, as well as a robust comprehensive experience in audiology diagnostics, hearing aids, vestibular testing, evoked potentials, and tinnitus. 100% of time will be at the Froedtert Hospital Main Campus (9200 W. Wisconsin Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53226) The ideal candidate for this position wants a comprehensive experience in audiology but is most interested in learning about implantable devices (cochlear implant and bone conduction implant) . This placement will be completed at the Koss Hearing and Balance Center, located at Froedtert Hospital. Please note focus is subject to change based on individual student experience and education, as well as contract between Froedtert Hospital, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the student's university. All audiologist's hold their CCC's and WI Audiology License. For the first 3 months of externship, the student will focus on implantable devices: Performing cochlear implant and bone conduction implant candidacy evaluations Implant device counseling Implant programming and follow-up Implant equipment troubleshooting For the remainder of the externship, the student will continue seeing some cochlear implant patients but will primarily gain experience in all areas of audiology below: Diagnostic Audiometry and Impedance testing including acoustic reflexes and decay Otoscopy (standard and video) Videonystagmography (VNG) Rotational Chair Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) Posturography (POG) (with physical therapy) Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAE) Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential (VEMP) (both ocular and cervical) Vestibular Rehab (with physical therapy) Auditory Brainstem Response Audiometry (ABR), diagnostic and threshold Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR) Cerumen Management Ototoxic Monitoring Hearing Screenings Occupational Hearing annual hearing conservation Hearing Aid Evaluations Hearing Aid Fittings Aural Rehab (in the context of hearing aid fittings/follow up) Earmold Impression Taking & Earmold Modifications Hearing Aid Follow-up Hearing Aid Verification & Validation Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) The ideal applicant will have a strong interest in implantable technologies with the desire to gain experience in all areas of audiology as well. Candidate will need to interview and complete separate onboarding orientation. This job will require application and obtaining a Wisconsin HIS "trainee" license upon acceptance of position. A Wisconsin HIS license (which requires taking an in-person exam) will then be obtained after starting. Will interview travel be compensated?

At the beginning of the externship, the student will meet with representatives for all cochlear implant and hearing aid manufacturers for training. We support students attending other conferences, but cannot provide financial assistance.

Yes Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: Students should have strong interest in cochlear implants. Students should be comfortable with basic audiometric testing, obtaining case history, and should possess a basic understanding of hearing aids. Experience with cochlear implants is not required. We value self-motivation, critical thinking, and a willingness to learn. Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: Over the course of the year, our extern will become proficient in the evaluation, programming, and follow-up of cochlear and bone conduction implants. We also expect our extern to become independent in comprehensive hearing evaluations and be competent in vestibular assessment and in hearing aid consultation, fitting, verification, and validation. The student will gain confidence in tinnitus evaluations and basic tinnitus management/counseling as well as with evoked potentials. Yes There is the possibility of participating in independent research studies as well as clinical trials for cochlear implants and hearing loss, if the student expresses interest. Consortium or collaborative arrangements with other sites? Yes Medical College of Wisconsin, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and Holy Family Memorial also have otolaryngology and audiology services which we collaborate with, but students are not expected to go to these sites. How frequently will the externship site communicate with the university during the externship? As Needed Communication or other support do expected or required from the university during the externship: University must complete an affiliation agreement. Provide preceptor with appropriate required paperwork and dead lines. Be available to communicate about student's progress, attendance, skills, participation, etc.
