Over the past several years, our school has experienced a significant increase in the number of students demonstrating intensive needs in social-emotional learning (SEL) and behavioral regulation. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade—particularly those identified with disabilities under Other Health Impairment (OHI) and Emotional Disability (ED)—frequently lack the self-regulation, frustration management, and coping skills necessary to remain successfully engaged in general education settings. Position Summary The Behavior Liaison will provide targeted instruction, coaching, and behavioral support to approximately twenty identified students requiring intensive social-emotional and behavioral intervention. The position focuses on teaching self-regulation, coping strategies, and replacement behaviors to reduce behavioral incidents and increase student access to academic instruction in general education settings. This role represents a strategic, research-based investment in preventative behavioral support and inclusive education. Measurable Outcomes (Grant-Funded Targets) The Behavior Liaison will directly contribute to the following short-term indicators by June 2027: Provide daily self-regulation and coping strategy instruction to decrease average daily classroom removals for identified students from 12 to 6 per day. Deliver professional learning and coaching to staff to reduce discipline referrals for identified students by 25% (39 referrals). Essential Responsibilities Direct Instruction in Social-Emotional and Self-Regulation Skills Provide daily small-group and individualized instruction aligned with students' IEP goals. Teach emotional awareness, impulse control, coping strategies, and replacement behaviors. Implement evidence-based curricula aligned with CASEL competencies and PBIS frameworks. Generalization and Coaching Across Settings Provide in-class and non-classroom coaching (classrooms, lunchroom, recess) to reinforce skill application in authentic settings. Collaborate with general education teachers and paraprofessionals to ensure consistent expectations, language, and reinforcement systems. Behavior Data Collection and Progress Monitoring Collect daily quantitative and qualitative data on behavioral incidents, engagement, and replacement behavior use. Conduct regular data reviews with IEP teams to assess progress and adjust interventions accordingly. Utilize data to guide individualized and proactive behavioral supports. Crisis Prevention and Intervention Implement antecedent strategies and proactive de-escalation techniques to minimize behavioral crises. Provide real-time support to maintain safety and instructional continuity. Reduce reliance on reactive crisis management practices. Collaboration, Training, and Capacity Building Partner with teachers, related service providers, and families to promote consistent behavioral support across settings. Provide professional development and coaching on proactive behavior strategies, trauma-informed care, and effective SEL instruction. Model instructional and behavioral best practices for staff.
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor's degree in Special Education, School Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Behavior Analysis, or related field. Experience working with students with OHI, ED, or significant behavioral needs. Knowledge of social-emotional learning frameworks, PBIS, and behavior intervention planning. Experience collecting and analyzing behavioral data. Strong collaboration and communication skills.Preferred:
Master's degree in a related field. Training in trauma-informed practices. Experience conducting functional behavior assessments (FBA) and developing behavior intervention plans (BIP). CPI or other crisis prevention/intervention certification.
