JOB GOAL
A Behavior Technician works as a team member with teachers, counselors, school social workers and other appropriate personnel to establish positive student contacts that develop appropriate and positive behavior modifications enabling students to succeed. He/she will assist instructional personnel by working with the student or students to implement positive behavior changes in development and monitoring of comprehensive behavioral objectives, goals and plans, including a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Work with students one-on-one to affect behavior changes
  • Evaluate student's needs and provide interventions to redirect behavior
  • Implement behavioral programs designed to make positive and appropriate changes
  • Assess crisis situations and defuse situations using conflict resolution and crisis management techniques
  • Reinforce appropriate behaviors and redirect negative behaviors
  • Provide values clarification including rules, expectations and consequences
  • Implement consequences for inappropriate behavior
  • With proper training, physically restrain students if necessary for safety
  • Communication/Consultation Work with staff to develop an effective program of activities for changing unacceptable behavior of students
  • Provide information to parents, guardians, or other care providers concerning action of student
  • Ensure consistency of behavioral standards by coordinating with appropriate student contacts
  • Monitor physical and emotional changes in students
  • Consult with teachers, support staff, and administrators to obtain information and advice on prior behavior problems, and provide information as necessary concerning behavioral concerns
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • An associate or bachelor's degree preferred
  • A valid New Mexico PED Education Assistant License as required by the State of New Mexico.
  • Experience in working with students with behavior issues.
