Job Description

Unit Clerk-ER Job Type/Hours per Week Full-Time/40 Hours per Week Salary Salary depends on education and relevant experience. Hiring Department Behavioral Health - 3 West Location This position is located at the UT Tyler Health Science Center campus. Job Summary The Unit Clerk serves as a front-line direct care staff member in an inpatient setting. The unit clerk is under the clinical supervision of the Unit Manager and the Charge Nurse providing desk clerk duties, supervising the Psychiatric Nurse Assistants (PNA) on the same rotation, assisting with assignments, ordering supplies, and floating between the Program and Psychiatric Intake. Works as a valued member of the professional team to provide verbal and supportive movement to meet individualized goals of the treatment team.. Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks
  • Serves as Desk Clerk for the Program and completes clerical duties as assigned.
  • Trains and provides Community Groups that are engaging, interactive and fun for patients and documents the activity to include date, time and signature.
  • Provides, trains, and monitors performance of patient oral hygiene which includes denture or partial denture care each shift worked.
  • Directs the patient care staff to give baths, which include bed bath, assist bath or partial bath, taking precautions to maintain skin integrity of the elderly.
  • Works with program leadership and direct care staff to meet hygiene needs of the patient on an ongoing consistent basis; Patients should be clean and have clean clothing with well-groomed hair and appropriate shave for men.
  • Maintains program supplies through routine inventory process. Orders program supplies as needed and calls for repairs as needed.
  • Cleans common rooms and utility rooms on a daily basis.
  • Utilizes therapeutic communication skills in the interactions with patients and interacts with patients in a caring, respectful manner in order to promote the healing process and return the patient to the least restrictive environment. May be assigned to provide one-on-one monitoring of patients.
  • The duties, location of work and shift/pattern are subject to change.
  • Completion of Annual Mandatory Training, SAMA training, TB testing, and required licensure and certifications before expiration date.
  • Accountable for the identification and reduction of unsafe practices that could cause harm to patients.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
Required Education/Experience Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of two years' experience in direct patient care in long term care and/or hospital settings. Experience in the care of geriatric and psychiatric patients preferred. Bilingual a plus Required Licenses/Certifications Certification as a nursing assistant is preferred. SAMA training at hire preferred. Possess and maintain current BLS certification. Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
  • Working knowledge of Electronic Health Records Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail as well as excellent communication skills. The ability to work well within a team setting. Knowledge of correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. Knowledge of clerical and administrative procedures.
