- Full-time The Laboratory Supervisor (Phlebotomy) oversees the daily operations of the phlebotomy department and related laboratory support functions.
The position is responsible for supervising phlebotomy staff, ensuring compliance with regulatory and organizational standards, maintaining quality assurance programs, coordinating workflow, and performing phlebotomy procedures as needed. The Laboratory Supervisor promotes excellent patient care, operational efficiency, employee development, and adherence to safety protocols. Duties and Responsibilities Including but not limited to: Supervise daily operations of the phlebotomy and specimen collection departments. Coordinate staffing schedules, assignments, and coverage to ensure efficient workflow and patient service. Perform venipuncture, capillary collections, and specimen processing procedures when necessary. Ensure accurate patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, handling, transportation, and processing. Monitor quality assurance indicators and implement corrective actions when necessary. Maintain compliance with CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, CAP, state regulations, and organizational policies. Train, mentor, and evaluate phlebotomy personnel to ensure competency and adherence to established procedures. Conduct employee orientation, training, performance evaluations, and competency assessments. Investigate specimen collection errors, incident reports, patient complaints, and service concerns, implementing corrective actions as appropriate. Monitor inventory levels and order laboratory and phlebotomy supplies as needed. Participate in the development, review, and implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and best practices. Ensure staff compliance with infection control, safety, and exposure control protocols. Collaborate with healthcare providers, laboratory personnel, and leadership to resolve operational issues and improve services. Generate and review departmental productivity, quality, and performance reports. Oversee monitoring systems to ensure employees perform job responsibilities according to training, competency, and organizational standards. Assist with accreditation surveys, regulatory inspections, and audits. Promote a positive work environment and effective communication among team members. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and Experience Associate degree in Laboratory Science, Health Science, or a related field preferred. High School Diploma or GED required. Phlebotomy certification from a recognized accrediting organization preferred. Minimum of three (3) years of phlebotomy experience required. Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory or leadership experience preferred. Experience in laboratory operations, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance preferred. Communication Skills Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, staff, vendors, and leadership. Ability to prepare reports, correspondence, policies, and procedural documentation. Ability to lead meetings, conduct training sessions, and provide constructive feedback to staff. Mathematical Skills Ability to calculate rates, ratios, percentages, and productivity measures. Ability to analyze operational data and performance metrics. Basic statistical understanding for quality assurance monitoring and reporting. Reasoning Ability Ability to analyze complex situations and make sound decisions. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Ability to identify operational issues and implement effective corrective actions. Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Computer Skills Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), Electronic Health Records (EHR), and laboratory management software. Ability to utilize reporting tools and maintain electronic documentation. Physical Demands The physical demands described are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, reach, bend, and use hands and fingers. Regularly required to perform venipuncture and specimen collection procedures. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 pounds. Requires visual acuity sufficient to perform laboratory and specimen collection tasks. May require extended periods of standing and walking throughout clinical and laboratory areas. Work Environment The work environment characteristics described are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this position. Work is primarily performed in laboratory, clinic, and healthcare settings. Frequent exposure to blood, body fluids, and other potentially infectious materials. Exposure to laboratory chemicals, cleaning agents, and biohazardous materials.
