SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Directs overall operation and coordination of services, staffing, testing, safety, etc. of Medical Arts Laboratory. Provides leadership, guidance and counsel regarding cost effective maintenance, development and implementation of systems and management tools which support operations and contributes to improved cost, quality and productivity. Responsible for acquisition of skilled staff. Acts as Technical Supervisor and General Supervisor as described under CLIA requirements. 90-95% of normal workday is spent working the bench performing laboratory testing.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Bachelors in Medical Technology, Chemical Physical or Biological Science and 4 years training/experience in high complexity testing in the respective specialty. Must be certified by ASCP (or equivalent agency).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Plans, directs and oversees day to day activities/functions of the laboratory. Supports and fulfills directives and delegated responsibilities of the Laboratory Director. Serves as a liaison between laboratory and physicians, patients, reference laboratories and medical staff. Handles/troubleshoots interaction with clients, vendors, etc. as needed. Assists in financial responsibilities by meeting budgetary goals and ensuring cost-effective utilization of resources. Consults with Laboratory Director and Medical Arts Associates Administration on strategic planning, budgeting and implementation of short and long term goals. Prepares annual capital equipment and other budgeted item requests. Reviews and approves plans for budget spending, labor and material efficiency including employee utilization. Review performance against plans and standards; approves changes in direction of plans. Develops and presents reports as requested by the Laboratory Director and Medical Arts Associates Administration. Defines and recommends objectives. Develops specific short-term and long-term plans. Consults in selection and development of projects. Oversees compliance with all regulatory agencies including city, state and federal agencies. Responsible for meeting and maintaining requirements outlined by accrediting agencies. Compiles and reviews Quality Assurance and Quality Control information, including proficiency testing and instrument maintenance. Develops and initiates new programs and services. Interviews and hires employees. Ensures new employees are oriented, trained and competent. Creates and maintains laboratory policy and procedure manuals in accordance with regulatory agency requirements. Performs laboratory testing, recording and test result reporting. Directly observes testing and oversees the competency documentation of employees.

Physical:
(sitting, walking, climbing, lifting, etc.) Position requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, and bending, stooping, reaching and stretching. Also requires lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. (reagent/diluent cubes). Must have ability to type accurately and view through a microscope.
