Purpose of the

Histology Supervisor:

Provide supervision of Histology and Immunohistochemistry laboratories through managing, planning, servicing, organizing and controlling the activities of personnel engaged in the handling and processing tissue cassettes and slides and in the generation of timely and accurate results. Direct all activities in accordance with the express standards of accrediting agencies, the Medical Director and UPMC health system. Provide for accountability to the Manager of Surgical Pathology for all administrative matters and Medical Director for all technical matters.

Responsibilities:

+ Recruit, interview and select personnel for roles within the laboratory.

+ Ensure staff is treated fairly.

+ Participate in the development and implementation of procedures and provide input to the goals and policies of the laboratory.

+ Act as liaison to other departments.

+ Ensure the laboratory meets regulatory guidelines, including licensing and CAP requirements.

+ Provide feedback to pathologists and other customers.

+ Ensure compliance with the UPMC philosophy and mission of service excellence.

+ Ensure that new employees are properly trained and oriented.

+ Monitor actions of staff; coach and generate disciplinary action when appropriate.

+ Participate in committees, specialty work groups and task forces as appropriate.

+ Create and maintain a customer-oriented and service excellence environment.

+ Provide technical advice and direction to laboratory personnel concerning complex/ sensitive tests and problems.

+ Define issues and problems in operations. Identify solutions and justify recommended solutions.

+ Prepare work schedules and define rotational workflow duties of laboratory staff.

+ Coach and advise employees on their performance.

+ Delegate tasks as appropriate and coordinate efforts to meet goals.

+ Monitor productivity of labs based on information provided by Management Reporting System.

+ Provide a safe work environment.

+ Ensure staff adherence to UPMC and laboratory policies.

+ Participate in QA activities; Identify issues that require focused QI team initiative.

+ Provide employee performance evaluations.

+ Pursue a program of self-development

+ Maintain and update procedure manuals.

+ Assure a highly professional and motivated staff that supports a service management. environment through the selection, development, direction and evaluation of subordinate personnel.

+ Assess laboratory operations and help to develop plans to improve the department's effectiveness and service.

+ Arbitrate disputes between staff members.

+ Remain abreast of developments in the field of management and laboratory science.

+ Successful completion of NAACLS accredited HT program OR Associate's degree OR 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/ university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry OR Bachelor's degree with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry. + 6 years of clinical laboratory experience post-training if certified as an Histotechnician or 5 years of clinical laboratory experience post-training if certified as a Histotechnologist.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

American Society Clinical Pathology Histotechnician (HT)or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification required.
