STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist performs clinical laboratory testing of biological specimens that involve the application of a variety of appropriate professional knowledge.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1.

Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results. 2. Follows procedures for handling potentially infectious materials. 3. Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples. 4. Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality control activities instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed. 5. Follows the laboratory's quality control policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established levels of performance. 6. Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. 7. Documents all corrective action taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. 8. Performs all routine and new test procedures that are complex and require professional judgement when assigned to a specific area. 9. Demonstrates knowledge of theory behind the test performed. 10. Recognizes departure from the norm on adult and geriatric patients and be able to understand the scientific and theoretical reasons for such deviation. 11. Calibrates instruments and assesses the accuracy of the equipment; performs equipment preventive and corrective maintenance. 12. Reviews outgoing reports for technical and clerical errors. 13. Assists the Laboratory Services Director in maintaining adequate supplies and inventor levels. 14. Demonstrates the ability to prioritize work duties. 15. Recognizes the administrative changes in staffing and scheduling and adapt to these changes. 16. Assumes the day to day duties of the Laboratory Services Director when required. 17. Perform phlebotomy on adult and geriatric patient with knowledge of the aging process. 18. Assists in developing and installing quality control standards to assure accuracy of test results. 19. Assists the Laboratory Services Director in reviewing and solving quality control problems. 20. Initiates, suggests and if necessary, implements technical and administrative changes upon approval of the Laboratory Services Director. 21. Assists in preparing policy and procedures manuals. 22. Performs phlebotomy on adult and pediatric patients. 23. Assists in training and orienting new employees. 24. Assists in handling clerical work as necessary. 25. Performs procedures/tasks that may result in exposure to blood and other potentially infectious material. 26. Demonstrates an understanding of the abuse reporting requirements of the various age groups. 27. Understands and adheres to the hospital's restraint procedures 28. Responds appropriately to patients and their families' cultural and spiritual considerations. Uses appropriate resources to meet the needs of the patient. 29. Demonstrates competence in the provision of care specific to adult and geriatric patients. Gives appropriate care by understanding the growth/developmental stages of various age groups.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED

Must be capable of performing high complexity tests that require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience and technical ability. Must meet CLIA requirements for Testing Personnel for High Complexity Testing. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must have the ability to work in a fast paced environment, effectively interacting with patients, physicians and hospital personnel. Must be customer service orientated. Strong interpersonal skills sufficient to work closely with others on a team. Must possess speed, consistency and accuracy in tasks, meeting precise tolerances and standards. Must be able to work alone effectively under stress in certain situations. Must be a self-starter with a high initiative; a good problem solver and decision-maker. Ability to demonstrate flexibility in work environment, performing a variety of changing tasks. Be able to sustain concentration and prolonged commitment to tasks. Display a high level of cognitive, interpretive or judgement skills. Ability to influence others plan, negotiate, direct, control or monitor others' activities.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution plus completion of one-year internship in Medical Technology required. Must possess a California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license and preferably certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The position requires pushing, pulling, and lifting materials not exceeding 50 pounds. Any workload exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance. Requires grasping, writing, standing, reaching, sitting, lifting, squatting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity. Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with employees, physicians, visitors and patients. Must have the ability to hear warning horns or sirens. Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near and far visions. Requires manual and finger dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Most work tasks are performed indoors. Temperature is moderate and controlled by the hospital's environmental systems. There may be exposure to communicable diseases. There may be exposure to some potentially toxic substances, such as medication and cleaning agents. Frequent contact with employees, physicians, visitors and patients.
