Review and analyze data of the processed samples. Perform routine equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, including Vitek instrumentations, with support from senior staff. Perform daily quality control and quality assurance checks regarding standard aspects of the Microbiology Laboratory. Assist with validation projects as directed by laboratory leadership.
Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise Key Job Elements Specimen Processing:
Accurately receive, verify and process clinical samples such as wound swabs, tissue samples and nail/skin samples (clippings/scrapings) for microbiology testing in accordance with laboratory protocol.
Gram Staining:
Perform gram staining assays accurately and consistently, following established procedures and quality standards.
Culture Reading:
Perform diagnostic isolation, identification and applicable susceptibility testing of bacteria, yeasts and molds.
Data Analysis:
Review and analyze processed microbiology samples and related testing data.
Laboratory Equipment:
Perform routine operation, maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting for microbiology laboratory equipment.
QC/QA:
Perform daily quality control and quality assurance activities required for the operation of the Microbiology Laboratory.
Validation Support:
Assist with validation projects as directed by laboratory leadership and senior technologists.
Cross training:
Participate in cross-training on fungal culture reading as competency is developed.
SOPs:
Assist in the development, review, and maintenance of standard operating procedures as required.
Reports and Documentation:
Accurately document testing activities and maintain patient reports, folders, and related records using laboratory LIS.
Safety:
Practice universal precaution measures necessary for the handling of patient specimens and use proper PPE when working in the laboratory.
Supplies:
Maintain adequate stock of commonly used microbiology laboratory supplies. Perform related responsibilities as required or as directed by laboratory leadership. Available to commit to some weekend and holiday work. Position Requirements (Education, Experience, Licensure/Certifications) Knowledge/Experience Bachelor's degree in laboratory science or related scientific field. 0-2 years of clinical microbiology experience Certification as a medical laboratory technologist or clinical scientist with a recognized agency (ASCP, AMT, etc.) Laboratory personnel participating in licensure or certification maintenance programs must complete the number of continuing education hours prescribed by their licensing or certifying agency. Technical laboratory personnel whose certifications have been grandfathered and do not require participation in a certification maintenance program must complete at least twelve hours of continuing education annually.
