A Clinical Laboratory Scientist analyzes samples of body fluids, tissues, and other substances for diagnostic and research purposes within a medical laboratory or healthcare facility. Perform complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests. Looks for bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, tests for drug levels in the blood to show how a patient is responding to treatment.
Available based on eligibility Job Summary The Medical Technologist performs a broad range of laboratory testing on patient specimens to provide accurate and timely clinical information for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. The technologist is responsible for maintaining high standards of quality, safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance while working independently during assigned shifts. Essential Responsibilities Perform laboratory testing across multiple disciplines, including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, and blood bank. Perform blood bank testing, including type and screen, antibody identification, crossmatching, and compatibility testing. Evaluate test results for accuracy, recognize abnormal or critical values, and follow established procedures for reporting results. Maintain compliance with quality control, quality assurance, and laboratory safety standards. Prepare reagents, monitor supplies, maintain inventory, and minimize waste while ensuring adequate materials are available for testing. Troubleshoot laboratory instruments and testing systems, escalating technical issues to appropriate resources when necessary. Document corrective actions and maintain accurate records in accordance with laboratory policies and regulatory requirements. Follow CAP, TJC, OSHA, and other applicable regulatory and accreditation standards. Communicate effectively with laboratory leadership and incoming/outgoing shifts regarding testing issues, pending work, equipment concerns, and patient-care priorities. Participate in competency assessments, staff meetings, process-improvement initiatives, procedure reviews, and departmental projects. Demonstrate sound clinical judgment and prioritize workload effectively in a fast-paced laboratory environment. Maintain confidentiality and follow all patient-safety and infection-control requirements. Required Qualifications Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field. MLT registry eligible or equivalent qualification required. MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification required within one year of hire. At least 5 years of Generalist laboratory experience preferred. 2-3 years of Blood Bank experience preferred. Previous experience working independently on second or third shift strongly preferred. Strong technical, analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills. Physical & Work Environment Work in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment with exposure to biohazardous materials, chemicals, and other workplace hazards. Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, stretch, and lift equipment or supplies weighing approximately 20-50 pounds. Ability to work independently while maintaining accuracy and productivity during overnight shifts.
