Non-Exempt Position Summary The Toxicology Laboratory Technologist performs routine and complex analytical laboratory testing on clinical specimens in accordance with CAP, CLIA, and state regulatory guidelines. Primary responsibilities include specimen processing and accessioning, performing qualitative and semi-quantitative urine drug screens on the Beckman Coulter AU480 clinical chemistry analyzer, and preparing patient samples for Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) confirmation testing. The technologist is responsible for strict adherence to chain-of-custody protocols, Quality Control (QC) monitoring, instrument maintenance, and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Essential Duties & Responsibilities Specimen Processing & Accessioning Receive, verify, and accession incoming clinical specimens (urine, oral fluid, or blood) following strict laboratory chain-of-custody procedures. Inspect samples for proper labeling, volume sufficiency, and physical integrity; document specimen rejections or discrepancies according to SOPs. Prepare samples for testing by centrifuging, aliquoting, and loading onto automated platforms or sample racks. Clinical Chemistry Analyzer Operation (Beckman AU480) Perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance on the Beckman Coulter AU480 system. Load, calibrate, and run Quality Control (QC) materials; evaluate QC results against established target values prior to reporting patient data. Execute routine immunoassay drug screenings, monitor analyzer reagent inventories, and troubleshoot technical or system errors as needed.
LC-MS/MS
Sample Preparation Execute pre-analytical sample preparation protocols for confirmation testing (e.g., pipetting, dilute-and-shoot, Solid-Phase Extraction [SPE], or Liquid-Liquid Extraction [LLE]). Prepare reagents, mobile phases, internal standards, and calibration standards accurately according to defined mass spectrometry protocols. Batch samples onto
LC-MS/MS
autosamplers and ensure correct loading order against sequence sheets. Quality Assurance & Compliance Maintain strict compliance with CAP (College of American Pathologists) and CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) regulatory standards. Participate in proficiency testing (PT) programs, correctly handling and documenting PT samples alongside routine patient testing. Maintain clean, organized, and safe laboratory workstations, adhering to OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards and Universal Precautions. Document all corrective actions, maintenance logs, and out-of-range quality control occurrences.
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a related chemical/physical laboratory science from an accredited institution. (Required)
Experience:
1+ years of hands-on experience in a CAP or CLIA-certified clinical testing environment. (Preferred) Experience operating clinical chemistry analyzers (specifically the Beckman Coulter AU series) or preparing samples for
LC-MS/MS
analysis is strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Strong understanding of clinical toxicology concepts, chain-of-custody, and QA/QC principles. High manual dexterity and micro-pipetting precision for manual sample preparation steps. Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) for specimen tracking and result entry. Strong analytical troubleshooting, organizational, and technical record-keeping skills.

$22.00 - $25.00 per hour
