Job Summary:
The Polysomnographic Technologist Registered works under general medical supervision to independently perform and evaluate overnight polysomnograms, MSLT's and oximetries, as well as operate sophisticated medical equipment to record sleep/wake physiology. The incumbent has the skills and knowledge to perform complex and non-routine recordings.
Education:
Required:
High school education or its equivalent.
Preferred:
Completion of an AMA approved program in polysomnography, EEG, or Respiratory Care.
Experience:
Required:
Current on testing equipment with 6 months experience. Position Requirement(s):
License/Certification/Registration Required:
Current Certificate for Registered Polysomnographic Technologist and licensed in the State of Tennessee.
Department Position Summary:
The Polysomnographic Technologist Registered functions independently to safely operate sophisticated medical equipment to record sleep/wake physiology. The incumbent administers oxygen and positive airway pressure devices in accordance with established protocols, applies recording devices to the patient, and performs cleaning/disinfecting of equipment. The technologist must recognize sleep pathology when it occurs and respond with appropriate interventions to ensure patient safety. The incumbent demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate for the age of the patient. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, posses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the information to identify each patient's requirements for care. A Polysomnographic Technologist Registered has the skills and knowledge to perform complex and non-routine recordings such as nocturnal seizure testing, MSLTs, etc. The technologist functions to assist and oversee the selection of a suitable course of action when necessary. The incumbent assists in the implementation of clinical protocols, participates in the development and implementation of inservice education, making recommendations for continuing education. The technologist accurately and reliably stages and scores polysomnogram recordings with a high degree of accuracy and prepare clinical reports for physician interpretation. The incumbent has a thorough understanding of sleep pathology and treatment options for the varying sleep disorders.
